Gabby Douglas is a 20-year-old artistic gymnast from Newport News, Virginia. She is nicknamed the Flying Squirrel, and she is one of the most decorated gymnasts around. At the 2012 Olympics, Douglas won gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions.
She became the first African-American gymnast to ever win the all-around event, and the first American gymnast to ever win both the all-around and team competitions in a single Olympic Games. Douglas has also been very successful at World Championships, winning a team gold in 2011, a team gold in 2015, and an all-around silver in 2015.
Douglas went back to the Olympics in 2016 to try to follow up on her historic 2012 campaign. She was part of the Final Five at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she won gold in the team competition.
Douglas’ gymnastics successes have led to her life story adaptation in the 2014 Lifetime biopic film, The Gabby Douglas Story, as well the creation of her own reality television series, Douglas Family Gold.
