When our idols die, we like to symbolically keep them close by watching their games or shows, with some fans going so far as to purchase belongings that they have left behind. One fan decided to do just that by purchasing the late Aaron Hernandez’s Massachusetts home, costing $1 million.
The house was purchased for $500,000 less than its original price
The 5,647 sq ft home is located in North Attleboro and was listed for sale before the NFL star had taken his own life in jail. Hernandez listed it for sale back in March 2016 for $1.5 million after being convicted of the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd three years before. Beforehand, a deal to sell it had not materialized.
The fan who purchased the property is Arif Khan, a real estate investor and Patriots fan. Being in real estate, he intends to sell the property for $1.4 million by the end of next year, having purchased the property for $500,000 less than its original price, reportedly with the help of his father.
At this time, it is not clear what the price Hernandez paid to purchase the house to begin with. This house was notably where Hernandez lived at the time of Lloyd’s death, becoming a focal point during the murder trial. Surveillance footage at the house, from cameras Hernandez owned, caught Hernandez at home with a gun, as well as capturing footage of Shaynna Jenkins removing a box wrapped in a garbage bag at his request after he was arrested for Lloyd’s murder in 2014.
The house remained on the market for over a year, likely in part due to the stigma of the murder case. When Hernandez was charged with the additional murders of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, his attorneys brought the asking price down to $1.3 million; the asking price went down further to $1.2 million earlier this year.
‘I feel a name change and a little upgrade on the property will increase its value’
While the controversy may have scared off some buyers, Khan is not intimidated. “Nobody wants to buy a house with Aaron Hernandez’s name on it, but I feel a name change and a little upgrade on the property will increase its value. It was a very cheaply priced property for what it is and the location is spectacular because of its size and proximity to the nearby Patriots stadium,” Khan explained in a statement with Daily Mail.
