Nascar star Danica Patrick,35, announced that she will retire at next year’s Indy 500. Patrick is a stock-car driver, a model, and a former advertising spokesperson for GoDaddy.com. She is also a highly successful racer, as she won the 2008 Indy Japan 300, and became the woman to win in an IndyCar Series race. She’s the highest-finishing woman in both the Indy 500 and Daytona 500, as she finished in third place in the 2009 Indy 500 and finished in eight place in the 2013 Daytona 500. She’s is also the only female driver to win a a pole in the NASCAR Cup Series. Patrick is the measuring stick for female racers all around the world.

On Friday, Patrick spoke at a news conference at Homestead-Miami Speedway and confirmed her retirement for next year. She said, “It just came from my heart, and I think it’s going to be awesome.”

Patrick recently spoke with the Associated Press and told them that it took many months for her to come to the realization that her career is coming to an end. She has set the 2018 Indianapolis 500 as her swan song.

“Nothing that was being presented excited me, then about three weeks ago, I just blurted out, ‘What about Indy? Let’s end it with the Indy 500,”’ she told the AP. “This ignites something in me. But I am done after May. Everyone needs to put their mind there. My plan is to be at Indy, and then I’m done.”

Danica Patrick first garned national attention when she raced in the 2005 Indy 500, becoming the fourth woman ever to compete in that race. In 2018, she’ll call it quits in the same race that helped make her famous.
