For food lovers across America, Thanksgiving is a special date dedicated to family time with plenty of food. So much food, that many refrigerators will be clogged with leftovers for days and even weeks. For those diehard Thanksgiving followers, you probably already have the date circled or marked on your nearby turkey calendar. But for the average schmo on the go, you’re probably going to want to know what day in November Thanksgiving will fall. But before I get to when, I’ll tell you how this holiday came about…

October 1621 saw the very first Thanksgiving. For three days, a festive feast was held, featuring 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans chowing down on plenty of food. The United States has celebrated this holiday on and off since 1789, until Thanksgiving was made a federal holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864 during the Civil War for “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

Thanksgiving is always the last Thursday in November. Therefore, this year’s holiday falls on Thursday, November 23, 2017. This is the day when millions in the United States give thanks and gorge on plates of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, string beans, cranberries, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, and much more. You’re late on this, dude. Canada already celebrated Thanksgiving. That country always celebrates that holiday on the second Monday in October, which was October 8, 2017. So, if any Canadians want to celebrate Thanksgiving the right way in ten days then they’ll just have to cross the border to the states, eh.
