Happy National Louisiana Day! Break out the beads, crack some crayfish, and crank out that old fashioned jazz from those computer speakers. On Thursday, November 9, 2017, the cyber community celebrates a day dedicated to the state with many, many nicknames (Sugar State, Bayou State, Pelican State, Creole State, the Child of Mississippi, Sportsman’s Paradise).

Back in 1803, the United States bought 828,000 miles of land from the French government, in what would be known as The Louisiana Purchase. In total, 15 states were acquired as a result of this deal. At first a territory, Louisiana officially became a state in the U.S. on April 30, 1812.

Louisiana is known for its diverse blend of cultural backgrounds, containing a mix of Native American, French, Spanish, German, African, Irish and Caribbean cultures. This diversity is reflected in the food, music, language, and history of the bayou.

You don’t have to go all out Mardi Gras to celebrate National Louisiana Day. You can just pester your followers on Twitter with a #NationalLouisianaDay post. Or you can head over to Popeyes and pretend you’re in Cajun Country (yet another nickname I made up for Louisiana).

Celebrate the Cajun State with style!

Time to dance with an alligator and a crayfish! Either that gator is super tiny or that’s a huge terrifying crustacean.
