J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has been adapted to stage, radio and, of course, film over the years. Now, television, or at least streaming, is the next venue the storyline will soon join if Amazon has its way.

Can this fill the ‘Game of Thrones’ Void?

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is reportedly in early talks to negotiate for a potential series inspired by The Lord of the Rings. The possible series is likely inspired by HBO’s Game of Thrones, also an adaptation of a fantasy book series, which is also set to conclude, soon. According to Coming Soon, Amazon is also hoping to shift their programming to include more large-scale shows with international appeal, something the Tolkien series has proven capable of, as opposed to smaller, niche programs.

It is also unclear if any upcoming series would be based on the original books or any of the film adaptations. Considering the former, it is possible that characters cut from the film adaptations could be included. Of course, we all know one adaptation Amazon should avoid at all costs, even if it did add a princess to the story…

Currently, there is no deal in place, with any talks being at an early stage. Potentially, according to Nerdist, if Amazon can pay up to $8 million per episode, it is still expected to be a high-quality production. Once given the green light, it is likely that the series would take two to three years to develop.
