Georgia High School Teacher Suspended For Asking Students To Reverse MAGA Shirts

Lyn Orletsky, a high school math teacher in Georgia, was suspended for asking two students to reverse their ‘Make America Great Again’ t-shirts. Following her suspension, Orletskuy resigned.

Orletsky, a former math teacher at River Ridge High School in Georgia, submitted her resignation to the board after receiving death threats while serving her suspension.

According to reports, Orletsky asked two of her students to turn their Donald Trump shirts inside out due to the fact that the slogan used by neo-Nazis and white supremacists during a violent Charlottesville rally.

In September, Orletsky was put on administrative leave in September after she told the students that wearing a MAGA shirt was like wearing a swastika.

Lyn Orletsky’s resignation is on the agenda set for 7 p.m. Thursday. She was put on administrative leave in September, shortly after a video of her request that two students wearing “Make America Great Again” T-shirts turn them inside out, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

She said she was motivated to ask the students to remove the slogan because it had been used by neo-Nazis during the violent rally in Charlottesville, Va. Orletsky told students that wearing the slogan made popular by President Donald Trump was like wearing a swastika.

The school district quickly apologized and said while disciplinary action against Orletsky wouldn’t be disclosed, the students weren’t in trouble. Cherokee County Schools spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby confirmed Orletsky’s last day would be Nov. 1 if the board accepts her resignation.

Orletsky released a statement on Wednesday, October 18, describing her ordeal while on administrative leave.

“After attacks on my character and threats on my life, I have made the decision to resign from my teaching position at River Ridge High School. While in hindsight I would have handled the situation differently, the outcry over this incident has been disproportionate to the event itself.”

Orletsky’s resignation submission is due for discussion October 19. Barbara Jacoby, a spokesperson for Cherokee County Schools, confirmed Orletsky’s last day would be November 1 if the board decides to accept her resignation.
