A shooting incident in Chula Vista, California has sent nearby schools into lockdown mode. Nearby college students report seeing an increased police presence on campus, while their lecture halls and classrooms are locked off. Schools such as Eastlake High School and Olympic View Elementary have also been placed on lockdown as of 8:30 A.M. PT.
Update (10/13/17; 1:09 P.M EST): The lockdown has been lifted and the robbery/shooting suspect has been arrested, according to Sweetwater Union schools spokesperson Manny Rubio. However, the details surrounding the incident robbery/shooting at the nearby pharmacy is still unclear. The gunman reportedly fire shots at employees at either a Walgreens or Walmart (depending on the source) after they had tried to prevent the suspect from stealing alcohol. Rubio said that the lockdown was a precautionary measure, and there was no immediate danger to students. The lockdown lasted for roughly 30 minutes. At around 9:30 A.M., the lockdown was officially lifted.
Update (10/13/17; 1:28 P.M. EST): Chula Vista police Capt. Eric Thunberg said that the robbery/shooting incident occurred just before 8:20 a.m. Friday at the Walgreens pharmacy at 1430 Eastlake Parkway, less than a mile from the high school. The shooter had a handgun, and was apprehended by police.
Update (10/13/17; 1:28 P.M. EST): “Our investigation found that the suspect tried to steal alcohol from the Walgreens,” Thunberg said. “When employees prevented him from doing so, he exited the store, pulled out a handgun and fire a round back towards the store and fled. No injuries were reported, and officers found the suspect and took him into custody “a short distance away.”
The shooting is said to have occurred near either a Walmart or Walgreens in Chula Vista, San Diego. At around 8:30 A.M., police responded to a shooting incident at the Rancho Buena Vista apartment complex across the street from the Eastlake High School campus, which is located at 1120 Eastlake Parkway.
