Hugh Hefner, the founder of the legendary Playboy magazine, died on Wednesday, September 27. Family and friends confirmed Hefner’s death at the age of 91.
Hefner is survived by his wife, Crystal, his daughter Christie and his sons David, Marston and Cooper. His body will be buried next to Marilyn Monroe in a mausoleum in Westwood Memorial Park, which he purchased in 1992 for $75,000.

Hefner was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1926. He was the first child of Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius Hefner, who both worked as teachers. His parents were from Nebraska. He described his family as “conservative, Midwestern, Methodist.”
Hefner, who was working as a copywriter for Esquire, left the magazine in 1952 because they denied him a $5 raise.
A year later, in 1953, he took out a mortgage, generating a bank loan of $600, and raised $8,000 from 45 investors, including $1,000 from his mother, to launch Playboy, which he was originally going to call Stag Party. The first issue, which was published during December 1953, featured Marilyn Monroe from her 1949 nude calendar shoot and sold over 50,000 copies.
In 1955, after the Charles Beaumont science fiction short story “The Crooked Man” was rejected by Esquire magazine, Hefner agreed to publish it in Playboy.
On June 4, 1963, Hefner was arrested for promoting obscene literature after an issue of Playboy featuring nude shots of Jayne Mansfield was published.
Hefner died at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California on September 27, 2017, at the age of 91.
