While the Caribbean and Florida are recovering from a brutal Hurricane Irma, another big storm is brewing in the Atlantic. Hurricane Maria is currently a Category 3 storm, with maximum sustained winds as high as 120 mph. The latest NHC advisory said: “Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher gusts.”

The growing presence of Maria has caused hurricane warnings Guadeloupe, Dominica, St Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and Martinique. Meanwhile, hurricane warnings are in effect in Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Saba, St Eustatius, St Maarten, St Martin, St Barthelemy and Anguilla.

Maria is expected to pick up steam, possibly graduating to a Category 4 hurricane. She is traveling over warm waters of 85 to 90 degrees, which previously gave more speed to Hurricane Irma, keeping it a Category 5 storm for several days.

But since the storm shifted slightly to the west, spaghetti models changed and predicted Maria to hit land, including the Caribbean islands and parts of Florida. This storm may prove devastating to the Florida Keys akin to Hurricane Irma destruction.
