Len Wein, the co-creator of iconic comic book characters Wolverine and Swamp Thing, has died of unknown causes at the age of 69.

Wein, born in New York City on June 12, 1948, began freelancing for DC Comics around the age of 20-years-old.  He would eventually begin working for Marvel Comics, where he and X-Men artist Dave Cockrum are credited for revitalizing the franchise.

According to ComicBook,  Wein created Wolverine with artist John Romita, Sr. The character debuted in The Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974.

In addition to Wolverine, Wein was involved in the co-creation of X-Men stalwarts Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus.

DC Comics confirmed the news of Wein’s passing on Twitter:

via Variety:

“Len Wein was one of the most welcoming people and legends in comics from the moment I joined DC eight years ago,” said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment. “He wrote or edited almost every major DC character — there’s hardly a facet of DC’s world that Len didn’t touch. I, DC, and the industry will miss him and his talent very much. Our love and prayers go out to Christine, his family, and his fans.”

Back in March, Wein tweeted that he wished he had Wolverine’s healing factor.

In the year 2008, Wein was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

Hugh Jackmanm, who played the Wolverine character for 17 years, took to Twitter to pay tribute to Wein:
