While one hurricane continues to cause lingering floods in Houston, another hurricane threatens the safety of many in South Florida, including the Jacksonville, Jaguars. Will the Jags make it to Houston to take on the Texans this Sunday at NRG Stadium? All signs are pointing to yes, but they may have a bit of trouble returning home to the Sunshine State.
“Obviously the No. 1 issue for us is the safety of our players,” Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone said. “Our thoughts go to the first responders, the people of Jacksonville and really people throughout Florida.”
Hurricane Irma is a Category 5 storm expected to hit South Florida by Sunday. A Category 1 version of Irma is expected to arrive in North Florida by Monday. NFL teams usually return home immediately after a road game. However, the Jaguars will remain in Texas on Sunday, and plan to reevaluate travel options the following morning.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have sent out an official statement regarding their travel arrangements. “In consideration for the safety of our players, coaches and staff, the Jacksonville Jaguars will remain in Houston following Sunday’s game and will reevaluate travel options on Monday morning. We will be thinking of those in our city and throughout Florida and the southeast who will be affected, as well as the first responders who will be working through this storm. We look forward to returning to Jacksonville as soon as possible.”
Coach Marrone indicated that Hurricane Irma is probably weighing heavy on the minds of his Jacksonville players.
“It would be kind of ignorant if we thought we were going to be there and a hurricane hits the state of Florida and we’re not going to be praying and looking at it on the news,” Marrone said. “What do you do? Do you tell someone, ‘Hey, let’s try not to be human beings here for a minute? Let’s forget about that?’ I don’t think you can do that.
