Quick confession: I’ve never seen a single second of Orange Is The New Black — never have, never will. From what I hear it’s an excellent show, there’s just wayyyyy too much prestige television out there for me to prioritize a female-prison based dramedy.
That said, if anything would get me to start watching, its Kimiko Glenn, the actress who plays Brook Soso on OITNB.
Other than being known for her role as Brook, Kimiko has also gained recognition for her portrayal of Dawn Williams in the Broadway musical Waitress.
Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, with her sister Amanda, Kimiko is of German, Scottish, Irish and Japanese descent. She began acting at the Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix when she was in the fifth grade.
Kimiko went to Desert Vista High School and then the Interlochen Arts Academy boarding school in Interlochen, Michigan. Later, she attended the Boston Conservatory for a year as a musical theatre major but dropped out after she was cast in the touring company of Spring Awakening.
In 2013, Glenn booked her breakthrough role as Litchfield Penitentiary inmate Brook Soso in the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black. In 2016, she was cast as Dawn Williams in the Broadway transfer production of Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson’s musical Waitress.
With prominent roles in both television and Broadway at only 28-years-old, Kimiko is here to stay.
