As the devastation of Hurricane Harvey continues to sweep across Texas, the best of humanity continues to pour into the state as well.
Whether it be first-responders or everyday-citizens, Americans of all shapes, sizes, and colors are coming out in droves to support the good people of the Lone Star State, including the head basketball coach at the University of Houston, Kelvin Sampson.
On Monday night, Sampson, who has been coaching at the University of Houston since 2014, took to Twitter ask for aid from his fellow basketball programs by asking them to donate their own shoes and shirts. Sampson asked that the teams send the donations directly to him at the University of Houston so he can distribute them to various relief agencies in the Houston area.
“I have had so many of my friends in the coaching profession text or call offering prayers and thoughts for all Houstonians. They all ask what can we do to help.
Well, I came up with something that coaches at all levels can help with, both men’s and women’s HS, JC, every level of D1, D2, D3 and NAIA, if you can please send 20 shirts and 10 pair of shoes. … For those that can’t send this request, please send whatever you can,” Sampson posted to Twitter. “All our hearts go out to those in need during these devastating times. We will get everything to the right agencies to be distributed. Thank you and God bless you all.”
Since Harvey made landfall last Friday, the storm has dumped more than 40 inches of rain in parts of the Houston area. Similarly, federal authorities say more than 30,000 people potentially must be relocated from their homes.
With unprecedented flooding hitting Houston and the surrounding area, donations and relief efforts of all kinds are desperately needed in the great state of Texas. Luckily, Americans from all ends of the spectrum have rallied together in order to help the determined people of Texas.
