A Los Angeles man, who identifies himself as a “black conservative,” was assaulted at an America First Rally in Laguna Beach, California Sunday night. He is a supporter of President Donald Trump, and believes that he was targeted simply for being a “black conservative.”

R.C. Maxwell says that he went over to the counter-protesters to engage dialogue, but was then assaulted in an “unprovoked attack.” Maxwell said “I think the fact that I’m a black conservative causes a lot of problems for the left side because there’s no way they can really resolve that, according to their narrative, to what they think Trump supporters are. So, I think that was a bit triggering to the other side.”

The man who admitted assaulting Maxwell is 20-year-old Richard Losey, of Ohio, who was arrested on suspicion of battery with a hate crime enhancement, but since the assault appeared more politically-motivated than race-related, authorities have decided to drop the enhancement because “there is not enough evidence.”

“Political motivation is not an area covered under hate crimes in the penal code,” Susan Kang Schroeder, chief of staff for the district attorney, said in a statement.

Richard Losey quickly went to Twitter after the Laguna Beach rally and admitted attacking R.C. Maxwell. “I did it because he would (not) stop talking about Trump when all of us told him thousands of time we didn’t want to hear it. I am NOT racist.”

When another Twitter user called for Losey’s arrest. He responded by Tweeting, “Please arrest me lmao”.

Counter-protesters arrived once again when Maxwell was being interviewed by the media. Antifa came out in an attempt to shout down this alternative voice. “Antifa is violent, keep your hands to yourself, man,” said Maxwell.

R.C. Maxwell and the reporter were swarmed by protesters, in what Maxwell describes as an “Antifa pinball machine.”

Maxwell responded to the hostility by saying, “I have a different political opinion, that’s no reason to treat me less human. But these so-called anti-fascists are literally the fascists themselves…they’re the ones who want to engage in violence, not dialogue.”

Despite the backlash, Maxwell says he will not be silenced and will still proudly promote his civil right to free speech and association. It is a civil right to be able to say “yes” to one party and “no” to another without fear of violent reprisal.

Maxwell told reporters that the sucker-punch wasn’t the only time he was attacked during Sunday night’s rally. He said, “someone tugged at my Make America Great Again hat while someone else came in with pepper spray, and the I was tackled from behind and then choked before my camera crew fended me off.”

R.C. Maxwell believes that he was targeted specifically for being a black conservative as they hurled race-related insults towards him such as “sellout and Uncle Tom,” as if he were a traitor to black people. Some even called him a “Nazi.”

“They were calling me a sellout,” said Maxwell. “They were saying I was a Nazi. I said sternly that I was not a Nazi. I tried to explain my kind of standpoint, epistemology as a black conservative.”

Maxwell supports President Donald Trump and his immigration policy. The America First rally he was attending has also been labelled as an “anti-illegal immigration rally.”

The counter-protester who was arrested allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill R.C. Maxwell. His bail has been set for the amount of $500.
