Joel lives in Detroit, Michigan, where he is pursuing a career in experimental music as well as painting. He grew up in the suburban city of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Joel is an outspoken critic against current US President Donald Trump. His political views are described as anarchistic-communist. On his Facebook, Vangheluwe shows his support for open borders and rejected nationalistic notions of border control.
