Rescues Underway After Gas Leak Causes Explosions At A Minneapolis Academy

A school collapsed in Minneapolis after an explosion. Officials say ruptured gas line caused the explosion. According to reports, rescues are underway for victims, and three people have been rescued off the roof.

The explosion happened the Minnehaha’s Upper School on 3100 West River Parkway in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to a statement from school officials, the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak. Minneapolis fire officials say three people are still unaccounted for and they continue to search the rubble. At this time, it appears the explosion was due to a severed gas line.

Early reports indicate that there has been one death, although it has not been confirmed.

At this time, 3 people are unaccounted. In addition, 5 people were transported to hospital, 1 of which was treated and released.

The Minneapolis Fire Department initially reported one person was dead, however they tweeted 20 minutes later that the fatality could not be confirmed. Authorities say at this point, they cannot confirm any fatalities.

According to school officials, all students have been accounted for. There were people in the gymnasium at the time of the explosion, according to authorities.

Residents near the area say they could feel the explosion. Some say their power flickered briefly after the explosion.

In a statement, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton said the state was in touch with local authorities to assist in the response. The state of Minnesota intends to “provide any and all resources necessary to aid first responders.”

Minnehaha Academy is a Christian private school in Minneapolis, Minnesota for students in preschool through 12th grade, and established in 1913. There are two campuses, the South Campus for preschool through 8th graders, and the North Campus, for 9th through 12th graders.

It is a ministry of the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, and is located in the Cooper and Hiawatha neighborhoods on West River Parkway. The student body is drawn from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and throughout the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, as well as several international students.
