Al Gore has been an integral part of politics and environmental advocacy for the past few decades. He was vice president under Bill Clinton, almost president in 2000 and now he is a leader in the fight against global warming. Gore speaks all over the country as he tries to raise awareness about the threats to the planet and the effects of climate change.

His documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” was released in 2006 and won an Academy Award.  His follow up film, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power,” will be released on July 28 and covers his work over the past few years and during Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency.

With his new film set to come out, let’s take a look at Al Gore’s net worth during his time in public office and since he has entered the private sector.


Al Gore’s Net Worth As of 2017: $200 Million


1976-1992- Early Years in Government

Al Gore was born into a political family, and followed the path of his father to the United States Congress. Gore was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat from Tennessee in 1976. He would serve in the House until 1984 when he was elected as a Senator. He attempted to run for president in 1988, but did not receive the Democratic nomination. Gore was re-elected to the senate in 1990, but resigned his position in 1993 to serve as the Vice President to Bill Clinton.


1992-2000- Vice Presidential Years

Al Gore served as vice president from 1992-2000. As vice president, Gore took up a mission of environmental activism and advocacy. He was a lead delegate in the “Earth Summit,” in 1992 and a major force in the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. Also while in office, Gore promoted the development of low-emission vehicles, began the GLOBE program which focused on education and set the groundwork for the DSCOVR satellite. Following his time in Congress and as the Vice President, Gore’s net worth was only around $1.7 million. 


2000-2017- Environmental Advocacy and Entrepreneurship

Gore ran for president in 2000 and was defeated by George W. Bush despite winning the popular vote. Following the defeat, Gore began his career in the private sector and as an entrepreneur. He has participated in various climate conferences and was a big part of the Paris Climate Accords in 2015. He received a Nobel Prize in 2007 for his work, and he continues to serve as the chairman of the Climate Reality Fund.

Most of Gore’s money does not come from his speaking appearances or work on climate arrangements. Gore was a co-founder of Current TV, and received a hefty payout when the company was purchased by Al Jazeera in 2013. Gore also serves on the board of director for Apple, and sold off thousands of shares in February 2017, netting him millions of dollars. He continues to hold stock in Apple and is invested in other companies and firms. His first movie made $24 million domestically, and his speaking tours are worth over $100,000 per appearance . Al Gore has continued to stay relevant and make money long after his political days have ended.
