AJ Styles kicks off SmackDown Live

AJ wants to be a fighting champion. Therefore, he’s bringing back the open challenge for the US Championship. And who comes out to answer that challenge?

Cena wants to fight and Styles accepts the challenge.


WWE United States Championship match: AJ Styles (c) vs. John Cena

Kevin Owens music hits before this match can start. He says no one wants to see another Styles-Cena match. KO believes he’s the rightful man to challenge AJ for the title. Owens says that Cena doesn’t deserve the title shot and no one wants to see him there. Cena responds by saying he can’t see him.

Cena tells KO to step up and fight him. But then outta nowhere, Rusev attacks Cena from behind. Styles tries to beat off Rusev, but KO comes in to take out Styles with a pop-up powerbomb. Rusev inflicts more punishment on Cena, locking John into The Accolade. Rusev and Owens stand tall over their fallen foes.


WWE Champion Jinder Mahal vs. Tye Dillinger

Mahal takes control of Dillinger early on. Jinder levels Tye with a clothesline. He locks him into a submission hold and then whips him hard into the turnbuckle. The champion is simply dissecting Dillinger. Mahal locks Dillinger into a submission hold again. Dillinger manages to escape, but Mahal quickly brings him back down to the mat.

Tye fights back, trapping Mahal into the corner and unloading on him with a series of punches. However, Mahal quickly squashes Dillinger’s momentum with a knee to the face. Jinder finishes off his opponent with The Khallas.

Post-Match: Mahal sends out a stern warning for Randy Orton. Next week, he’ll bring the Punjabi Prison to SmackDown.


Xavier Woods vs. Jey Uso

Woods goes off on Jey with a flurry of punches. Jey regains ground. Kofi and Big E of the New Day enter the ring, and Jimmy Uso pops up on the apron. The referee ejects the Big, E, Kofi and Jimmy from ringside. Woods is distracted and turns around to a superkick.

Jey ascends the top rope, looking to put away Woods. Jey attempts a splash, but Xavier puts his knees up. Jey and Woods mix it up. Xavier is able to put away Jey with an elbow from the top rope (literally, he walked from the turnbuckle and walked on the top rope, jumped off and dropped an elbow).

Ya boy, Xaiver Woods gets the win, bay-beeeee!

Segment In Shane McMahon’s Office

WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi wants to know who her next challenger is, and it better not be Lana. Charlotte enters the room and is hungry for a title show. Out comes almost the entire women’s division, and McMahon makes a match. At Battleground, they’ll be a 5-women elimination match and the winner becomes the new #1 contender for Naomi’s title. The wrestlers in that match will be Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Tamina, and yes, even Lana.

“Ms. Money In The Bank” Carmella enters the office with her briefcase and piece of paper in her hand. It’s a letter from her lawyer demanding James Ellsworth be reinstated. Shane McMahon takes the letter and rips it into tiny bits.


Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin

Nakamura assaults Corbin before the match. Both men brawl outside he ring. Corbin sends Shinsuke over the barricade. The battling superstars fight amongst the fans. Corbin returns the fight to the ringside area. Meanwhile, WWE officials try to break up the fight. Corbin walks away. Baron looks back at Shinsuke from the entrance ramp.

Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch vs. Tamina Snuka & Natalya Neidhart

Becky tries to attack Tamina, but Ms. Snuka squashes the orange-haired Lynch. Tamina is solidly in control and bring the fight to the corner. Snuka runs right into trouble and Becky turns the tide. Becky controls the offense and tags in Charlotte. The Queen goes on the attack and puts the hurtin’ on Tamina.

Snuka turns the tide on Charlotte and tags in Natalya. Nattie drops Charlotte, but gets too cocky. Charlotte quickly returns to her feet and kicks some serious ass. Becky gets the tag again. Lynch comes in like a jolt of lightning.

Nattie brings the fight to the ringside area, and whips Lynch into the steel steps. During the commercial break, Nattie has Becky grounded.

Tamina gets the tag. Nattie and Snuka stop away on Becky in the corner. Tamina continues the punishment, but Becky breaks free. Lynch is looking for a tag, but Tamina quickly regroups and prevents that tag from taking place. Snuka is all over Lynch.

Nattie gets tagged back in. She locks Lynch in a breath-taking headlock. Becky breaks free and fights her way to Charlotte. The Queen enters the match and goes on the attack like a true she-beast. Charlotte is leveling her competition. But then “The Ravishing Russian” comes down to ringside.

Charlotte continues the punishment on Nattie. Lana distracts Charlotte while Natalya tags in Tamina. Snuka bides her time on the apron. Charlotte is about to lock Nattie in the Figure-Eight Leg Lock, but Tamina comes in and knocks The Queen’s block off.

Love Hurts When You’re Sami Zayn

Sami Zayn runs into Mr. and Mrs. Maria Kanellis backstage. They’re mushy public displays of affection are making him sick. Plus, is Mike Kanellis even a contracted wrestler for SmackDown? What’s going on here? Welp, Sami probably should have kept his mouth shut because this couple didn’t take his words too kindly…


Runway Walker, Texas Ranger

Breezango is back with another humorous, semi-erotic segment. This time they’re parodying Walker, Texas Ranger. I hope Chuck Norris wasn’t watching…


Main Event: Kevin Owens & Rusev vs. John Cena & AJ Styles

Cena and Rusev start off this match-up. Rusev locks John in a headlock and Cena breaks free and catapults Rusev into the ropes. Rusev mows down Cena and then goes outside the ring to wave the Bulgarian flag. The crowd chants “USA! USA! USA!”

Rusev returns to the ring and faces off against a game John Cena. John controls the match, putting the punishment on “The Bulgarian Brute.” Owens gets the tag and beats Cena into the mat. Owens picks up Cena just to punch him down. KO brings John into the corner and tags in Rusev. Rusev stomps Cena into the corner. The referee gets distracted by AJ Styles, so Owens yanks on Cena’s head.

Cena stumbles out to the center of the ring, and Rusev cleans his clock as we go to the commercial break.

Rusev and Cena are brawling when we return from the break. Cena tries to fight off The Bulgarian Brute and go for the tag, but Rusev crushes him with a spinkick. The brute goes for the cover. 1…2…Cena kicks out! Rusev ascends the top rope and attempts a headbutt, but Cena moves out of the way. Styles finally gets the tag. AJ dominates, taking out Rusev with a clothesline and an elbow. Rusev tries to turn the tide, but Styles regains ground and locks the brute in a Calf Crusher submission hold.

Owens breaks up the submission. Rusev attempts a comeback, but AJ is way too slippery. KO distracts Styles, which gives Rusev enough time to level his opponent. Owens gets the tag and he double-teams Styles with Rusev. KO assaults Styles with his fists, and then traps him in a headlock. Styles fights up and out, and rolls up Big Kev for a pin attempt. 1…2…kick out!

KO quickly regroups and nails Styles with a clothesline. Owens goes for the cover, and AJ kicks out at 2. Rusev gets tagged back into the match, and he double-teams Styles with Owens. Rusev almost takes Styles head off with a superkick. He goes for the pin. 1…2…Styles kicks out!

Rusev talks trash to Cena and then traps Styles in a bear hug. AJ headbutts Rusev. Styles breaks free and takes out Rusev with a big kick. Both John Cena and Kevin Owens get the tag, but Cena is absolutely relentless. John takes down Big Kev and hits him with the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena is about to level Owens with an Attitude Adjustment, but Rusev runs in the ring and Cena puts down KO.

The Bulgarian Brute nearly takes off Cena’s head with a superkick. Styles springboards in the ring and takes out Rusev with a Phenomenal Forearm. AJ stuns Owens with a Pele Kick. And Cena finally puts away Big Kev with an Attitude Adjustment.
