On July 11, home-field advantage for the World Series will be determined as the American League and National League all-stars play against each other. The American League has won the last four all-star games and will look to dominate its opposition once more. Standing in their way is the National League who will look to end the four game win streak and provide a National League team with home-field advantage in the World Series for the first time since 2012.
The American League will most likely choose Red Sox ace Chris Sale (11-4, 2.75 ERA) to start the game and then rely on other staters like Twins ace Ervin Santana (10-6, 2.99 ERA) and Royals Jason Vargas (12-3, 2.62 ERA). Afterwards, one can expect a healthy dose of Indians reliever Andrew Miller (1.42 ERA) and Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel (23 saves and a 1.19 ERA). Overall, it makes up one great pitching staff.
The American League also has an impressive lineup that will rely on tons of speed from multiple Astros including Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and George Springer while also possessing a ton of power courtesy of Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (30 HRs) and Blue Jays slugger Justin Smoak (23 HRs). The American League also have various sluggers who could provide crucial contributions off the bench including Home Run Derby participants Miguel Sano (21 HRs), Gary Sanchez (13 HRs) and Mike Moustakas (25 HRs).
The National League will most likely choose Nationals ace Max Scherzer (10-5, 2.10 ERA) to start this year’s All-Star Game and then rely on other quality starters like Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke (11-4, 2.86 ERA) and Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood (10-0, 1.67 ERA). The National League also has a variety of elite relievers including Cubs closer Wade Davis and Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen. Overall, this pitching staff is also extremely solid.
The National League’s lineup is what I believe will separate them from the American League. This lineup is stacked to the brim with elite hitters. When Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt (20 HRs and 67 RBIs) is coming off of your bench along with Reds first basemen Joey Votto (26 HRs and 68 RBIs), your team might be a little bit too good at hitting. This lineup has a perfect blend of average and power and should be able to score a decent amount of runs against the American League.
Although a lot of people dislike baseball due to its slow gameplay, this is one area where I think the MLB excels in. In my opinion, the MLB All-Star Game is the best in all sports. It is truly the only All-Star Game that actually means something. While the NFL, NBA and NHL rely on high scores and no defense in their All-Star Games, the MLB actually allows viewers to watch the best players in the sport play against each other with 100% effort. I hope that, at some point, the other major sports organizations adopt this rule and make their All-Star Games move competitive in the future.
I look forward to watching this game and expect the National League to come out victorious. I just think that the National League is too stacked on offense and will use its bullpen to maintain the lead to win by a score of 5-3.
