Alexander Bonds, 34, has been identified as the suspect involved in the shooting death of New York Police Department officer Miosotis Familia, 48. Bonds allegedly shot the female cop dead in her command trailer early on Saturday morning. Familia, a 12-year police veteran, died after being rushed to the hospital for surgery. Bonds was killed by other officers as he attempted to flee the scene.

What Happened?

Around 12:30 A.M. EST on Saturday, gunshots were heard near the intersection of 183rd Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Familia was sitting in her marked vehicle when Bonds shot at her through the passenger side window. He was later shot dead by other officers as he tried to run.

An innocent bystander was also reportedly shot in the stomach but is now said to be in stable condition.

The attack is being viewed as a possible assassination as Bonds had posted anti-police messages on social media, the New York Post reports. According to the New York Daily News, Bonds posted on social media about a police officer in Oakland, California who stopped a child riding a bicycle.

Bonds has a lengthy criminal history. In 2001, he was arrested for pummeling another NYPC officer with brass knuckles along with four others. At the time of the shooting, he was on parole for a 2014 robbery in Syracuse. His criminal record also includes arrests for drug violations in 2000 and 2002.

Police Commissioner James P O’Neill said the attack was unprovoked.

“The city was celebrating our Independence Day,” May de Blasio said, starting off a press conference on the shooting. “One of those days we look forward to each year.

“The NYPD did an extraordinary job keeping our city safe…and tragedy struck.”

Familia’s partner immediately radioed for assistance while other officers engaged the suspected shooter one block away.

“Shots fired!” an officer was heard yelling into his police radio. “I need a f—ing bus! 10-85 10-85! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”

It was initially reported that another suspect was in custody following the shooting. Police have since clarified that there are no outstanding suspects.
