Virginia State University Evacuating Buildings Amid Bomb Threat

Police are evacuating buildings at Virginia State University as they investigate a bomb threat on the Chesterfield County campus.

What Happened?

VSU told authorities that it received a threatening phone call Wednesday evening. No other specific details regarding the threat have been released as of yet.

“Continue to Shelter in place, Police on scene. Please report any suspicious activity to VSUPD,” the VSU police tweeted. Officials also warned students to avoid campus and the surrounding areas.

The school said that the Virginia State University Police Department, the Chesterfield County Police Department and the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation are leading a full investigation into the bomb threat.

“The safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors is our main priority,” the school said in a statement. “More details will become available upon the completion of the investigation.”

No other details were made immediately available.


Virginia State University

Virginia State University (VSU), also known as Virginia State, is a historically black public land-grant university located north of the Appomattox River in Petersburg. Founded on March 6, 1882, Virginia State developed as the United States’s first fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for black Americans. The university is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Today, the school serves 6,000 students.
