Remember her name: Erin Haggerty. She is only a 20-year-old college student from Pine City, New York, who happened to win a trove full of money. In fact, Haggerty became $1,000,000 richer.

While away for college, her mother, Diane, would routinely send her daughter greeting cards with scratch-off tickets in them. Although I would simply give up after two tries because of how low the chances of winning a boat-load money are, Diane kept ’em coming.

Little did she know, the St. Patrick’s Day card came with a “Win $1,000 a Week for Life” ticket inside. When she scratched off three “LIFE” symbols, the business administration major won a guaranteed $1,000,000 prize.

“I immediately had visions of living well after college,” explained Haggerty. “Then I went out and did one of my favorite things. I went shopping!”

Haggerty’s mother initially bought the golden scratch-off ticket at the Wegmans on South Bridge Street in Corning. “I send tickets to my daughter and my nieces and nephews. It’s a little entertainment to break up the monotony and there are plenty of one and two dollar tickets that you can buy without spending a lot of money.

If I won that enormous sum of money, I want to have it to be paid as a one-time lump sum. Haggerty must’ve read my mind as she did the same exact thing. She will receive a net check totaling $536,090 after required withholdings.

Haggerty is the 28th New York Lottery player to win a prize of $1,000,000 or more in 2017.

Don’t think purchasing one to two dollar worth lottery tickets is a waste. Instead, you might be a lucky winner like Erin Haggerty!
