I’ve been critical of Avatar in the past, but after taking a trip to Pandora: The World of Avatar down at Disney World and seeing the latest casting news, even I’m starting to get excited for the sequel. Today comes news that Game of Thrones and Taboo actress Oona Chaplin (granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin) will be joining the cast of Jame Cameron and 20th Century Fox’s four planned sequels. The news was announced Tuesday during CineEurope in Barcelona.

Not only is Chaplin absolutely stunning, but she’s proven on the small screen to be a dramatically underrated actress. Those big eyes convey a lot of emotion and whether she’s in human or Na’vi form, I’m all for her casting.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver will all be returning for the sequels which will begin dropping in 2020. Plot details are being kept more tightly under wraps than the chemical composition of Unobtainium, but there is some information on Chaplin’s character.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

Chaplin will play Varang, a strong and vibrant central character who spans the entire saga of the sequels. Cameron said that each of the four sequels will be able to stand alone, but will together create a saga.

The original 2009 Avatar opened new doors for filmmaking technology, CGI and world-building. Looking back on it, it’s not too big of a surprise that it earned an all-time record of $2.8 billion worldwide.

Avatar 2 will open Dec. 18, 2020; Avatar 3 will open Dec.17, 2021; Avatar 4 will open Dec. 20, 2024; and Avatar 5 will open Dec. 19, 2025.
