Sonequa Martin-Green, 32, is an American actress and producer best known for her role as Sasha Williams on The Walking Dead. But for anyone who is all caught up on the TWD – spoiler alert – you know that Sasha killed herself in the conclusion of season seven in an attempt to whack Negan via zombie chow. It was a bold move, to say the least, even though it failed hilariously. But did you know the real reason TWD killed off Sasha?
As it turns out, Martin-Green was cast as the lead in CBS All-Access’ upcoming Star Trek revival series: Star Trek: Discovery. For Martin-Green, it was an easy choice. A supporting character on TV’s most popular show is a great gig, but the chance to bust out front and center with such beloved source material like Star Trek was too much to pass up.
Prior to these two “breakout” roles, the Alabama native appeared in a handful of independent films before nabbing her first recurring role on The Good Wife. While filming The Walking Dead‘s third season, Martin-Green was also cast in the recurring role of Tamara on Once Upon a Time. Believe it or not, she started out hoping to become a psychologist. Good thing the acting bug bit her in tenth grade.
It’s incredibly difficult to be a working actress and at just 32, Martin-Green has pretty much crushed every goal an up-and-comer in the industry could have. I, for one, am excited to see Star Trek back on TV and am especially looking forward to seeing what Martin-Green can do in the lead role.
Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS on September 24th before moving full-time to the network’s streaming service CBS All Access.
