USS Fitzgerald Collides With Filipino Ship: Full Story & Details

A U.S. Navy Destroyer collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant ship off the coast of Japan. Currently, seven U.S. Navy crew members are missing as a result of the collision. One crew member in injured in the crash. An injured person has been airlifted by a Japan Coast Guard helicopter.

The USS Fitzgerald received partial flooding from the crash on its starboard side above and below the waterline. The crew has worked to pump out this water.

No one of the Filipino container ship has reported any injuries for their crew members.

The Japanese Coast Guard sent five patrol ships and an aircraft carrying medics to the site on a search and rescue mission. According to U.S. officials, tugboats and other Navy assets, including aircraft, are on the way to help out.

 The merchant ship involved in the crash is ACX Crystal based out the Philippines.
The US Navy’s 7th Fleet twitter account reports that they are working the Japanese Coast Guard. Both military units are providing medical evacuations for the injured.
The USS Fitzgerald had just received $21 million in upgrades and repairs in February. This vessel is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer with a crew of approximately 330 sailors. The destroyer’s purpose on the coast of Japan is to “provide stability and security” for the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Fitzgerald has been deployed for the seas around Yokosuka, Japan.
The White House is currently looking into the incident.
