Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday that he wishes for his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee to be public.

“He believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him,” said Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores.

Sessions will testify Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 P.M., less than one week after former FBI Director James Comey did the same. The moves puts Sessions front and center regarding his potential contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States and a national investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 elections via hacking.

Sessions had been scheduled to testify Tuesday before the House and Senate subcommittees that oversee his department’s budget, but now Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will go before them instead.

“Some members have publicly stated their intention to focus their questions on issues related to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, from which I have recused, and for which the deputy attorney general appointed a special counsel, ” Sessions wrote. “The Senate intelligence committee is the most appropriate forum for such matters, as it has been conducting an investigation and has access to relevant, classified information.”
