West started off his career as a sidekick on a kid’s show called El Kini Popo Show. He later took over as host of the show. In 1959, the young William West Anderson moved to Hollywood with his wife and two children. Under the bright lights of Hollywood, he took up the stage name of Adam West. And the rest would be history…

Adam appeared in numerous television programs, including westerns, sitcoms, science-fiction, and crime dramas. But West finally hit super-stardom when he was cast as the lead character in the 1966 series Batman. This show inspired a film and lasted for over two years, producing 120 episodes in total.

Batman may have been both a curse and a blessing. His role as the caped crusader typecasted West. Adam’s next film The Girl Who Knew Too Much became a big box office disappointment.

The fading star struggled and sought a living making Batman appearances. He even got into a mini-feud with Jerry “The King” Lawler when he appeared for the Memphis, Tennessee-based United States Wrestling Association. But West was no wrestler…

West appeared in numerous films and movies throughout the ’70s and ’80s. He may not have that high-profile Batman role anymore, but the guy can still get work. He appeared in films such as The Curse of the Moon Child (1972), The Specialist (1975), Hooper (as himself; 1978), The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood (1980) and One Dark Night (1983). West also made guest appearances on shows such as Maverick, Bewitched, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island.

Adam returned to his role as Batman numerous times throughout his career. He starred in the short-lived 1970s cartoon program The New Adventures of Batman. He even returned to playing Batman live and in costume on the TV special Legends of the Superheroes.


1990s – Present

Fast forward to the 1990s and West is profiting off of his status as a cultural icon. He appeared as himself on programs such as The Drew Carey Show, Murphy Brown, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Ben Stiller Show, and more.

West also appeared as a washed-up superhero on the Goosebumps episode “Attack of the Mutant.” He also appeared on the show Space Ghost Coast to Coast in the episode “Batmantis.”

He’s lent his voice to many television shows. His voice acting resume includes appearances on The Simpsons, Johnny Bravo, Futurama, Rugrats, Kimpossible, and more. But he’s most famous for playing the role of Mayor Adam West in the hit prime-time cartoon sitcom Family Guy.

In 2010, West was given a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. On April 12, 2012, the actor received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A year later, he was the subject of his own documentary called Starring Adam West.

Adam West has left a lasting mark on the world of popular culture. He’ll be remembered for all the laughs and smiles. West is the funniest Batman to have ever lived, which is a hard task to pull off since the caper crusader is so dark and serious.
