Zhang Ziyi is the latest name to be added to the sequel of 2014’s Godzilla, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Warner Bros. is hoping the sequel will help jumpstart its shared MonsterVerse and Ziyi will help to accomplish that goal.
The Chinese actress is best known for her scene stealing roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha. Thankfully, she won’t be around just to become monster-chow as SlashFilm is reporting that WB plans to include her in several installments within the MonsterVerse.
Zhang will make her first appearance in Godzilla: King of the Monsters as a member of Monarch, a “covert, creature-cataloging” organization that ties together the films in the MonsterVerse, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She joins the already cast Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown in the sequel to the 2014 Godzilla, which is set several years after the events after the first film.
Going forward, her character is already set to appear in future MonsterVerse chapters, including the anticipated Godzilla vs. Kong. Based on these sparse details, it’s possible that she could fill a Nick Fury-like role as the connective tissue in this shared cinematic universe.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters follows Godzilla and this year’s Kong: Skull Island as the third entry in Legendary and WB’s shared kaiju monster-verse based on giant creatures from iconic Japanese sci-fi.
Movie-crossovers are fun, but have audiences reached the breaking point with all of these shared cinematic universes? Hopefully not, because we want to keep seeing Ziyi in big blockbuster films. In the meantime, though, check out the gallery we put together above.
