Legendary baseball player Jimmy Piersall passed away today at the age of 87. He played for many different teams in the major league, but his stint with the Boston Red Sox was perhaps the most impressionable, as he was inducted into their personal Hall of Fame in September 2010.

Piersall died at a care facility in Wheaton, Illinosis. He had been sick for months and succumbed to his illness.

He had a MLB career that spanned nearly two decades (1950-1967). At only 18 years old, he signed on with the Boston Red Sox. He played for five different teams in his career, including the Cleveland Indian, the Washington Senators, the New York Mets, the Los Angeles Angeles.

Piersall had a very lively personality as well. One time, he even decided to wear a Beatles wig as he stepped up to bat. He played air guitar with that bat like it was nobody’s business. In his autobiography Fear Strikes Out: The Jimmy Piersall Story, the Hall of Famer says that “Probably the best thing that ever happened to me was going nuts. Who ever heard of Jimmy Piersall, until that happened?”
