Why Did President Donald Trump Abandon The Paris Climate Accord?

President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord because he felt that the deal was unfair to the businesses, workers and taxpayers of the United States. He left the option of returning to the Paris Climate Accord or any such international agreement in the future, but if that deal is negotiated in favor of the American people.

The former President Barrack Obama had pledged his support to this agreement, as well as laying out the goal to reduce America’s carbon emissions by about 1.6 tons in the year 2025. Behind China, the U.S. is the world’s second largest producer of carbon. However, Beijing has been going green lately, canceling construction of close to 100 coal-fired power plants and allocating billions of dollars in big-time wind and solar technology.

Officials at the White House call this accord “a BAD deal for Americans” and that Trump’s decision to abandon this agreement relates to “his campaign promise to put American workers first.”

Here is Trump’s official statement on leaving the Paris Climate Accord earlier today:

“In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens. The United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord … thank you, thank you … but begin negotiations to reenter either the Paris Accord or an entirely new transaction with terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers. So, we’re getting out, but we’ll start to negotiate, and we’ll try and see if we can make a deal that’s fair. And if we can, that’s great.”

Officials believe that the accord “was negotiated poorly by the Obama Administration and signed out of desperation.” White House talking points also mentioned that, “The U.S. is already leading the world in energy production and doesn’t need a bad deal that will harm American workers.”

Here’s a look the congressional talking points from the White House, which defends Trump’s decision to exit the Paris Climate Accord:

Some scientists speculate that Trump’s withdraw may add 3 billions tons of carbon dioxide pollutants into the air within the span of one year. Therefore, suddenly abandoning this deal may set the climate moving in the direction of more melted ice caps and higher sea levels, accompanying more extreme weather.

But Trump did open up the possibility of renegotiating this deal. And this guy “allegedly” wrote a book about The Art of the Deal.
