The U.S. Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, has been placed on lockdown after a ‘security incident’.’

According to reports, the base is undergoing a security incident and is directing all personnel to stay inside their current location. Also, they specifically asked everyone on the base to stay away from the Arnold Hal area.  The Arnold Hall Community Center, which features an amphitheater, a ballroom, a conference room and a game room, is used for meetings, seminars, conferences and retirement ceremonies.

Oscar Balladares, a spokesman for the base, could not say when it was ordered or why.

“It’s a security incident. I don’t know more beyond that,” he told local news outlets.

The entrances to the base were closed to traffic. The Joint Base San Antonio is about 7,000 acres and has 9,000 personnel present at any given time.

Update – 1:25 PM EST: The lockdown has ended, although no explanation as to why it happened has been given.

About the Lackland Air Force Base

The Lackland Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Bexar County, Texas. The base is under the jurisdiction of the 802d Mission Support Group, Air Education and Training Command and an enclave of the city of San Antonio. It is the only entry processing station for Air Force enlisted Basic Military Training.

Lackland AFB is part of Joint Base San Antonio, an amalgamation of the United States Army Fort Sam Houston, the United States Air Force Randolph Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base, which were merged in October 2010. Joint Base San Antonio, which includes Lackland Air Force Base, was established in accordance with congressional legislation implementing the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The legislation ordered the consolidation of the three facilities which were adjoining, but separate military installations, into a single joint base – one of 12 joint bases formed in the United States as a result of the law.

The facility consists of United States Army Fort Sam Houston, the United States Air Force Randolph Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base, which were merged on October 1, 2010.
