13 Carleton College students have been suspended over a hazing incident that involved ‘extreme drinking’ as part of an initiation into a secret social club.

Police are investigating the incident, along with an alleged sexual assault that followed the hazing incident at the private Minnesota college.

A letter from Carleton College President Steven Poskanzer to students, faculty, and staff says the hazing on April 28 was part of an initiation into a secret social club called ‘DTX,’ which is an apparent reference to the Delta Tau Xi fraternity in the movie Animal House.

Via The Star Tribune:

The club is not sanctioned by Carleton, a highly regarded liberal arts school of roughly 2,000 students in Northfield that has never had fraternities or sororities.

Poskanzer’s letter said that the “event on campus that has severely compromised” the college’s fundamental value of mutual respect “involved hazing and extreme alcohol consumption as part of initiation into a secret coed social club.”

A school investigation found those responsible violated the student code of conduct that forbids hazing and other actions that threaten the health, well-being, and safety of others.

In addition, Carleton College officials said Northfield Police were investigating an allegation of sexual assault following the hazing incident. The school declined to provide details in an effort to protect the student’s privacy.

Carleton College is a liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota with a student population of about 2,000.
