Comic book lovers are pumped, as it’s just been reported that Tom Hardy will play the titular role in the upcoming film Venom. The movie is a Spider-Man spinoff centered around one of the most badass villains in the Marvel universe.

From the Hollywood Reporter, here are more details on Venom.

Venom has been one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers. He made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and was portrayed by Topher Grace.

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the latter of whom worked on 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, wrote the script for Venom. Plot details are being kept in the black but Hardy, who is said to be a Venom fan, will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing along with Amy Pascal.

Sony isn’t messing around these days, as Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017 and Venom is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018. Ruben Fleischer has been selected to direct Venom, which seems like a bit of a risk. He’s directed three movies up to this point in career, and while Zombieland was awesome, 30 Minutes or Less and Gangster Squad weren’t well-received by critics.

It’s hard to make a bad movie when you’ve got Tom Hardy as your star, though. We all remember what happened the first time he played a comic book villain.
