1979

Berman joined ESPN in 1979 just one month after its founding. At the time, television industry insiders doubted that a 24/7 news network dedicated to sports would survive. However, Berman quickly gained a strong following thanks to his sense of humor, snappy catchphrases and the funny nicknames he gave to athletes. Berman, widely known as Boomer, and Bob Ley are two of ESPN’s longest-tenured employees.

By 1993, Berman was considered the leader of the ESPN team and had become one of the most recognizable sportscasters in the business. At some point during his tenure at ESPN, Berman has anchored SportsCenter, Monday Night Countdown, Sunday NFL Countdown, the US. Open, the Stanley Cup Finals, the NFL Draft and other programming on ESPN and ABC Sports. In addition, Boomer has also served as the chief play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s Wednesday baseball telecasts while also announcing hockey and golf as well.
2017

In January 2017, Berman announced that he will step down as the host of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, NFL PrimeTime and Monday Night Countdown following the Super Bowl. He spent 31 years as the network’s primary NFL studio host. He will remain at ESPN in a reduced role going forward.
Before this announcement, it was believed that Berman earned an annual salary of $3 million. In his professional career, Berman was won the National Sportscaster of the Year Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association six times and the Sportscaster of the Year Award from the American Sportscasters Association three times, among other honors.
