We have a new president in France! The right-wing wave of political power may have died down somewhat with the election of Emmanuel Macron as President of France today.

Macron was going up against right-wing, nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen. We saw yuge right-wing takeovers in the political systems of many powerful nations, from England’s Brexit to the United States’ election of the outspoken Donald Trump.

Today, most of the citizens from France pushed back against the far right and welcomed in more a centralist candidate.

If elected president, Le Pen promised to withdraw France from the European Union. She stoked nationalistic fervor among supporters. But that wasn’t enough to defeat Macron on this day of ultimate decision.

Emmanuel was endorsed by former US President Barrack Obama. Once the polls closed in France, CNNThe New York Times and showed the world that this central-thinker defeated Le Pen by double digits.

Le Pen earned 34.5% of the vote, while Macron won the election with 65.5% of the voting public.
