Eighty-three Chibok girls have been set free after successful negotiations between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. The liberated girls have been transported to Banki, in northern Nigeria. They are currently in military custody for the time being.

In 2014, a total of 276 girls were kidnapped by the militant terrorist group Boko Haram. They were all captured in a boarding school in the village of Chibok. They were forced from their beds in the middle of the night. These girls were between the ages of 16 and 18 during the time of the mass abduction. They were set to be sold into marriage by their captors.

Quickly after the mass abduction, 57 girls ran to freedom. In May 2016, the next girl was found nearly two years after she was kidnapped by Boko Haram. Another 21 school girls were set free in October 2016. They were handed over to authorities after successful negotiations between Boko Haram and Red Cross.

The 2014 kidnapping inspired the #BringOutGirlsBack social media movement and sparked global outage.

The freed girls will be transferred to the capital city of Abuja, where they will undergo medical tests and be reunited with their families for the first time in years.
