It’s been over five years since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was tragically murdered by George Zimmerman. However, despite the fact that it’s been half a decade since his death, the world has still not forgotten about Trayvon.

Florida Memorial University, a tiny university in Miami, has decided to posthumously grant Trayvon a college degree.

Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton, who attended Florida Memorial University, will accept the award in his memory alongside his father, Tracy Martin.

Florida Memorial University addressed the decision on their Facebook page:

“As we approach 50 years in Miami Gardens, this commencement holds a special place in all of our hearts. Of special significance is awarding posthumously the Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation to Trayvon Martin. Sybrina, our alum, epitomizes strength and dignity as she uplifts other victims of violence while effecting change for a more equal and just society.”

Furthermore, there will be a fundraiser and private reception on behalf of the Trayvon Martin Foundation and FMU’s Department of Aviation and Safety. Before he was killed, one of Trayvon’s dreams was learning to fly, giving the honorary degree a special meaning.

The ceremony for Trayvon Martin will be held on May 13 at the FMU Wellness Center Arena.
