Carlow University Freshman Dies After Falling Off Fifth-Floor Balcony

Dalton Bacco, a 19-year-old student at Carlow University, has died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony at the Catholic college in Pittsburgh.

Bacco of West View, Pennsylvania, died around 5:00 P.M EST on Wednesday, May 3, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. According to a spokesman from Carlow University, Bacco fell from the balcony on the top floor of the University Commons building to the pavement around 4:30 P.M. The University Commons building houses the student center, library, and the president’s office is on the fifth floor.

Bacco, who was a graduate of North Hills High School in Ross Township, was a freshman member of the Carlow University men’s golfing team.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner Office’s identifies the victim as 19-year-old Dalton Bacco of West View. He was a freshman at the university and a graduate of North Hills High School. Bacco was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in very critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

Brooke Bagnell, a Carlow student, said, “Everybody was crying, everybody was upset. This is a small campus; it’s almost like going to high school. Everybody ran outside. If they weren’t already out here, they ran out, and were comforting their friends that saw it. I had friends that saw it.”

Emily Schaeffer, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh Police, said, “The fall did not appear to be accidental or suspicious, but the investigation is ongoing.” Pittsburgh Police, Carlow campus police and University of Pittsburgh campus police are investigating the tragedy.

“As of right now it does not appear to be accidental or suspicious in nature, but they’re going to continue to investigate. We are still waiting for the medical examiner for the exact manner and cause of death. We will continue to investigate,” Schaffer said.

Drew Wilson, the director of media relations at Carlow University, said, “We’re devastated. First of all, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

A prayer service to be held at the Mother of Sisters of Mercy Chapel in the Convent at Carlow University is scheduled for Thursday, May 4, at noon.
