Former NBA All-Star guard and current coach of Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Brandon Roy, is recovering after being injured during a shooting this past weekend in Los Angeles. According to USA Today’s Sam Amick, Roy was shot in the leg while shielding some kids outside of his grandmother’s house.

What Happened?

Roy, 32, is expected to make a full recovery after being shot in the leg while protecting kids outside of grandmother’s house in Los Angeles over the weekend.

“Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California,” the Trail Blazers said in a statement. “According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”

According to KING-TV, Roy was treated in Southern California before returning to Washington State.

As of now, no further details of the shooting are known.

Roy played five seasons in Portland before retiring in 2011 because of ongoing trouble with his knees. He attempted a comeback in 2012 and appeared in five regular-season games for the Minnesota Timberwolves, before undergoing another knee surgery. He was released in March 2013.

In his six seasons, Roy was named Rookie of the Year in 2007 and was a three-time All-Star (2008-2010). In 2009, he was named All-NBA Second Team and in 2010 he was named All-NBA Third Team.

Roy took over Nathan Hale’s boys’ basketball program in 2016 and was named the Naismith National High School Coach of the Year after leading his team to an undefeated (29-0) record during the regular season.
