News broke out early Wednesday morning that former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernadez had hung himself in his jail cell. Hernadez was recently acquitted of a double murder that occurred in 2012. He was serving a life sentence in a Massachusetts maxim prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd. 

This former tight end was that the height of his career when he was arrested back in 2013 and was one of the top tight ends in the NFL. Due to his criminal history, he has had a fall from grace, with his legacy being basically erased from the NFL and NCAA. While the star did commit suicide, his attorney had said that Hernandez was not suicidal.

While a majority of his NFL salary is going to legal fees, Aaron Hernandez did manage to raise a pretty considerable net worth.

To understand how Aaron Hernandez managed to gain that high of a net worth, let’s look back on this former NFL stars history.

2007 – 2010

Hernandez was supposed to sign with UConn, his home state’s college, but decided to go for Urban Meyer’s University of Florida. Hernandez was able to prosper with the Gators and had a stellar college career. He was limited in touches during his freshman year, only accumulating 151 yards and two touchdowns.

His Sophmore year saw a rise in his performance and game time and he ended the season with 34 receptions for 381 yards and five touchdowns. That year the Gators also managed to make it to the 2009 BCS Championship game and defeated the Oklahoma Sooners. Hernandez’s was able to garner 34 receptions for 381 yards and five touchdowns in his junior year. He decided to forgo his senior year and entered the 2010 NFL Draft.

2010 – 2013

Due to some allegations about criminal activity while in Florida, his NFL stock fell. It was also reported that he had failed a drug test, which also worried many teams. However, the New England Patriots decided to take a chance on this tight end and drafted him. This was a very profitable draft year for the Patriots as they also drafted Rob Gronkowski in an earlier round.

Hernandez broke out as a rising star in 2010 and ended the season with 45 receptions for 563 yards and six touchdowns. In 2011, Hernandez helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl XLVI, and while he scored the go-ahead touchdown in the game, the Patriots lost the Superbowl to the giants 21-17. Gronk and Hernandez were a top tight end duo and both were in the top five tight ends in the NFL during the 2011 and 2012 season. After getting a signing bonus of $12.5 million at the start of the 2012 season, Hernadez would play his last NFL football game in the AFC championship against the Ravens.

2013 – 2015

Breaking news came out that the police had arrested Aaron Hernandez at his home on June 26, 2013, in connection with the murder of Odin Lloyd. He had apparently shot his friend in the back and chest, and the day after he tried to cover the evidence by destroying his phone and his home security system. Days earlier, after news broke out of the investigation, the Patriots barred Hernandez from coming to the Patriots facilities.

After the arrest, the Patriots released the tight end from their roster, offered fans to get compensation for trading in their jerseys, and all memorabilia of Hernandez was removed. The tight end also had his endorsements taken away, his likeness removed from all NFL and NCAA video games, his football cards for that year destroyed, and photos of him were taken down at the University of Florida. In 2015, Hernandez was found guilty of the murder of Odin Lloyd and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. 

2015 – Present

Hernandez popped up sporadically after his conviction, due to both ongoing cases and issues he caused in the prison. He got into altercations with prisoners and threatened a prison guard. A majority of his salary was going to pay for legal fees for the multiple cases he had against him. He was still being tried for the 2012 double murder but was acquitted of all charges in 2017. Six days after being acquitted of the double murder, Herandez hung himself by his bedsheets in the early morning of April 19, 2017. The former tight end did not leave a suicide note as to why he did it.

Today, the New England Patriots are visiting the White House after their historic Super Bowl win over the Atlanta Falcons in February. Philo High School, located in Duncan Falls, Ohio, was evacuated for about a hour Wednesday afternoon after a bomb threat was discovered in a restroom.

What Happened?

Philo High School Principal Troy Dawson revealed that he received a call from a teacher around 10:40 A.M. regarding a piece of paper in a restroom. The paper contained a message saying a bomb would go off at the school on Wednesday.

Dawson said students and faculty were immediately evacuated and local law enforcement were called to the scene. K-9 units with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office searched the building, but no explosive materials were found. Students and faculty were admitted back into the school around 11:40 A.M.

Dawson said it is unknown who wrote the note but he believes the person who wrote it will be found and expelled.

He said an emergency call was sent to parents letting them know of the threat and that they could come get their child. A second call later let parents know the threat was over, but students could still leave for the day.

Dawson said the evacuation interrupted ACT retesting and athlete physicals.

Philo High School

Philo High School is a public high school in Duncan Falls, Ohio that serves grades 9-12. It is the only high school in the Franklin Local School District. The school colors, as well as the district colors, are gold and blue.

Keira Knightley, 32, is best known for her role as Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. That makes sense given that the franchise is about to put out its fifth (!) movie. The first installment in the series dropped in 2003, meaning Knightley has been playing the part for a whopping 14 years. But the English actress has done more than just flit about with Johnny Depp.

Knightley made her acting debut in 1993, starring in commercials, small TV roles and whatnot. According to recent rumors, Conor McGregor is returning to the ring to take on Tyron Woodley for the Welterweight Championship at UFC 213 in July.

Leading the way for the Wizards was John Wall. The four-time All-Star had a monster game, scoring 32 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the floor, grabbing four rebounds, and dishing out 14 assists. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Wall became just the third Wizards player to ever have 30 points and 10 assists in a playoff game, joining Archie Clark and Gilbert Arenas’ crazy ass.

Dennis Schroder and Paul Millsap carried the load for the Hawks, as the duo combined for 44 points. Schroder had 25 points, three rebounds, and nine assists, while Millsap finished with 19 points, two rebounds, and one assist. If the Hawks are going to even things up with a Game 2 win, they will have to cut down on the turnovers. They gave the ball away 19 times in Game 1, making life extremely difficult for themselves.

Morning classes are the worst in college. I’d rather sit through every single one of M. Knight Shyamalan’s terrible movies than wake up at the crack of dawn for higher learning. That probably explains why I never had a class earlier than 10:00 A.M. during my collegiate days. But now a new study suggests that may have actually been very smart of me to do.

According to a new study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, early classes can actually be detrimental to your learning ability. In fact, some researches are even pushing colleges to offer more classes later in the day, NPR reports.

HA! Take that, Mom and Dad. I wasn’t lazy, I just had foresight…I’m getting off topic.

The study found that the majority of college students aren’t in prime learning mode until around 10:00 or 11:00 A.M. Researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno and the UK’s Open University surveyed 190 freshmen and sophomores about their sleep schedules and productivity to determine how effectively their brains function at different times of the day.

Surprise, surprise: the researches found that most college-aged kids can’t perform at peak level early in the morning. Now before you start arguing that their lethargic early morning natures are due to excessive nighttime drinking, let me first hit you with some good ‘ol fashioned biology.

“There has been evidence over time from specific studies indicating that teenagers’s body clocks are set at a different time than older folks,” Professor Mariah Evans, a co-author of the study, told NPR. “It has nothing to do with laziness. It’s not in their control. It’s to do with their bodies.”

Basically, forcing young students to awaken from their slumber at 7:30 A.M. and endure a three-hour Western Civ lecture about Hammurabi’s Code is equivalent to waking up an adult for work at 5:00 A.M. and expecting top shelf results.

Science folk have long argued that middle and high schools should start later in the day and that extends to colleges that serve a ton of teenagers.

“We want the students to learn,” said Evans. “We go to great lengths to increase academic performance with methods that are less effective than the free solution of just changing the timings.”

Paris Dunn, who goes by the stage name Paris Dylan, is a very popular online model. Dunn has a huge social media presence with 25,000 Twitter followers, 87,000 Facebook fans and 370,000 Instagram followers. But when Dunn was just 17-years-old, she became ensnared in an elaborate catfishing scheme that would eventually see threats, blackmail, search warrants and an NBA star.

“A catfish is someone who uses internet profiles to interact with people online, usually pretending to be either a version of themselves or someone entirely different,” Nev Schulman, the creator of MTV’s Catfish series, explained. “What [Dunn’s] catfish was able to accomplish is not only sophisticated, but incredibly manipulative, emotionally very traumatic, and at the same time wildly creative and somewhat impressive.”

When Dunn was just 17 years old, she admitted she began flirting with pro-athletes online, telling them she was older. Soon she though she had attracted NBA star Chris “Birdman” Andersen on Facebook.

In fall 2011 she received a message that appeared to be from Andersen on Facebook that said, “Hey … I see you’re a fan.” Dunn said she was a little skeptical at first, “but being 17, I was an excited girl.”

“I wrote back and was like, ‘Hey,’ and then like it was kind of like, ‘What are you doing?’” Dunn continued. “I remember that he said that he was eating pizza and you know it kind of took off from there.”

She said their conversations were carried out over Facebook, email and texting, which then led to sending each other selfies. Eventually, this included nude photos as well. But soon, Andersen’s “best friend” Tom began messaging her as well. The only problem was that Andersen, who really was communicating with Dunn, didn’t know any Tom.

Eventually, things took a turn south. Dunn said Tom threatened to share the nude photos she sent Andersen and said he was going to post them online along with her name, address and phone number. She then said Tom sent her a link that included all the photos she had sent Andersen. She said the photos were then posted online for a short time.

“He said that he was going to send somebody down there … he was going to have me raped, and murdered, and thrown on the side of the street,” Dunn said.

After a crazy ordeal that involved threats and blackmail, Tom was revealed to be a reclusive Canadian woman named Shelly Chartier who had been catfishing both Andersen and Dunn. Chartier was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In what has already been a tight series, the Atlanta Hawks will look to even things up on the road against the Washington Wizards tonight. The Wizards, who posted one of the best regular season performances in recent franchise history, are a high tempo team that are difficult to keep up with.

Washington’s offense runs through John Wall, as we saw in Game 1. He scored 15 of his 32 points in the third quarter and added 14 assists overall to the mix, as well. The Hawks will need to find a way to slow down the elite scorer to notch the series up at one apiece.

The Hawks were able to control the first half of Game 1 and even went into the break with a 48-45 lead. The Wizards’ big third quarter changed the game and left Atlanta in their wake for most of the second half. Dennis Schroder led the way for the Hawks, putting up 25 points.

The Hawks will look to limit turnovers and play smarter basketball to stick with Wall and the likes of Bradley Beal, Markieff Morris, and Otto Porter.

The three-seed Houston Rockets beat the hell out of the six-seed Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1, cruising to a 118-87 victory in front of a raucous Toyota Center crowd. OKC was able to hang around in the first half, but the Rockets left them in the dust in the second half. Houston outscored OKC 59-33 in the third and fourth quarters, as their high-octane offense was simply too much for the Thunder.

Most NBA pundits think that it’s a two-man race for MVP between James Harden and Russell Westbrook. Even though I believe that Westbrook is 100% the MVP, I have to concede that Harden outplayed Westbrook in Game 1. He poured in 37 points on 13-of-28 shooting from the floor while grabbing seven boards and dishing out nine assists.

Westbrook filled the stat sheet in Game 1, as he finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. But he did have a dreadful shooting night, hitting just 6-of-23 from the floor and 3-of-11 from three-point range in a very inefficient performance. Westbrook wasn’t the only Thunder player to struggle with his shot, though. As a team, OKC shot 37.0% from the floor, while Houston hit at a blistering clip of 49.5%.

Game four is set to take place in Toronto as the Maple Leafs have the series lead over the Capitals, 2-1. While the Capitals were the favorites to win the series over the wild card Maple Leafs, it seems Toronto may have the advantage over Washington. With three games being decided by overtime, it really has been the luck of the draw for these two teams. With the Capitals looking to even out the series, be prepared for an electrifying matchup.

The Capitals just seem to have luck on their side of the postseason. With the reoccurring theme of how the Capitals seem to choke every year in the playoffs, this might be another season that falls under the same blade. While the series is nowhere near being over, tonight is a very decisive game to win for the Caps. The Capitals are an amazing team, so I have no doubt they will keep this series alive and tie it back up. No one expected the Maple Leafs to overtake the Capitals. After winning two overtime games and taking the series lead, things are looking up for Toronto. With a win tonight, the Leafs can head to Washington with a chance to eliminate the Capitals. Toronto needs to keep their head clear and focus on the win tonight because if the Capitals win tonight, they can easily regain the lead and win out this series. The Maple Leafs just need to keep up the great work and keep outplaying the Capitals if the want to win this series.

Round One in the battle of NBA MVP candidates certainly went to James Harden. The Houston Rockets scored an easy 118-87 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1. Triple-double king Russell Westbrook will need a much better performance in tonight’s game at the Toyota Center to upend Houston.

A 2-0 deficit is never easy to overcome, and the Thunder are desperately trying to avoid that hole. Oklahoma City will be making plenty of adjustments to change the course of Game 2. The Thunder did a good job defending Houston from the three-point line, but struggled in the paint, giving up a whopping 62 points and 31 second chance points.

Leading the charge for the Rockets was none other than Harden who scored a game-high 37 points. Despite an off shooting night from beyond-the-arc, Harden was able take advantage around the hoop. The Thunder will need to find more answers other than just Westbrook, who shot just 6 for 23 from the floor.

Including the regular season, Houston now owns a four game winning streak over the Thunder and would like to extend that streak at home tonight. Another triple-double from Westbrook would definitely be a big boost for OKC in this series.

Game four is underway as the Blues are looking to clinch their spot to the next round and eliminate the Wild. The Blues seem to have taken control of the series ever since the first game over time win. The Wild are looking to stave off elimination and to try in stay in the postseason with tonight’s game.

The Blues have been able to outmaneuver and outplay the Wild in this series so far. After having an average season, it seems this team has really turned it on in the playoffs. The Wild looked like the better team going into this series. Many had the Wild as the team to possibly be in the western conference final, but those expectations seem to be falling flat. After two back to back disappointing losses to the Blues and a possible elimination in tonight’s game, the Wild are on the edge and are just hoping to stay alive in the postseason. Being in enemy territory is never easy, and the Wild are hoping to force a game five and send this series back to Minnesota. Even if they win tonight, the Wild’s job is not finished as they will still have to win two more games to tie up the series and then win in game seven. While the odds may be against them, the Wild have a small chance of overcoming the odds and getting back into this series. Seeing how the Blues are playing though, don’t get your hopes up too high.

The first trailer for Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle dropped this week, if you can even call it that, given it’s blistering pace, with all of the footage being showed in about 10 seconds. It’s a bonkers trailer for an even more bonkers franchise. A franchise whose first movie that I thought was relatively excellent.

I’m not a big action movie guy. I cannot stand the Fast franchise (or is it the Furious franchise? And I hear they’re going to space soon?). I’m a HUGE comic book guy, and even the Marvel movies are a little too bright and poppy for me. So whenever a new attempted action franchise springs up, my expectations are low, and my desire to see it is even lower.

Then there was Kingsman: The Secret Service. I saw the trailer with the English Tom Hanks (Collin Firth), Samuel L. Jackson, and some British kid, and thought, ‘Eh, another average action movie that I’ll roast a bowl to when it’s out on HBO.’ You know what I mean? Kind of like John Wick — when trailers for that dropped, people were all like ‘f*ck Keanu Reeves’, and now here we are a couple years later, and the John Wick franchise is one of the most enjoyable in Hollywood.

But then reviews started rolling out, one thing lead to the next, and me and my fraternity brothers at Rutgers went down to the school’s theater to see what all the hype was about. Spoiler alert: it was great.

It was perfectly paced, genre-norm eschewing, consistently funny, ironic, unorthodox, action-packed, and most surprisingly, it had characters worth investing in. I know you were bummed when Harry Hart got clipped, and I know you were pumped when you heard he was coming back for the sequel (because he was that great of a character that the franchise couldn’t afford to keep him dead).

Plus, it had this scene, which pound-for-pound, can go toe-to-toe with any action scene from the past decade, whether that be a preposterous chase scene in a Fast movie, or the fantastically brutal reality of The Raid.

Naturally, it goes without saying that I have massive expectations for the sequel, given the pedigree of the director, the world established in the first film, and for the frankly 1927 Yankees-esque cast: Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore, Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell from Game Of Thrones), Mark Strong, and of course, Eggsy himself, Taron Egerton. If you’re counting at home, that’s FOUR Academy Award wins for Best Actor/Actress among the leads (Firth, Bridges, Berry, Moore), and probably dozens of other various nominations between the cast as a whole. Actors like that don’t join some half-ass action franchise. 

And if the screenshots I (painstakingly) took from the trailer are any indication, the sequel is going to be even more delightfully eccentric and kick ass than the first.

So, the question is: is my co-worker an idiot for not liking the original Kingsman movie and not being hyped for the sequel? I think yes, and if you disagree, you’re probably just one of them mouth-breathing Fast and Furious fans.
