Mykel Peterson, a four-year-old boy with autism, died after being given an anesthetic during a routine dental procedure.

Peterson was having a cavity filled at Must Love Kids Pediatric Dentistry in Vancouver, Canada on Friday, March 10, when the complications took place.

Thmeka Curry, Peterson’s mother, said the dentist was repairing a previous treatment and had chosen to sedate Peterson because he was ‘agitated’ during his previous visit.

Mykel Peterson was put under with anesthesia to fill a cavity, but never woke up. The dental office where it happened, Must Love Kids, was closed Monday. An employee who came to the door, told KGW it was out of support for employees and the boy’s family after what happened Friday.

The Washington State Dept. of Health says it’s now reviewing the case to decide if they’ll open an investigation. The Clark County Medical Examiner says the cause of death is pending until toxicology results are finalized in 6-8 weeks.

Mykel had been slightly sedated before using a nitrous oxide mask, but Friday, his mother says Mykel got a shot of the common anesthesia drug Ketamine to put him totally under while the dentist looked at whether he needed fillings or a crown. The procedure went well, it’s what happened afterward that’s changed her life.

Minutes ticked by, and Curry says he was breathing. Then he wasn’t. CPR started, 911 was called and Mykel was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Peterson’s death is now being investigated by the Clark County Medical Examiner, which will finalize toxicology results in about six to eight weeks. The practice where Peterson died, Must Love Kids, released a statement saying that staff was ‘heartbroken and devastated’ by Mykel’s death, however, they could not comment on specifics given the medical examiner’s investigation.

What Happened?

Everett, a city in Washington State, is suing the manufacturer of the drug OxyContin after claiming it let OxyContin flood the black market, which then “sparked an addiction epidemic in the community.”

Everett, a city north of Seattle, is suing Purdue Pharma, which manufactures the opioid-based pain medication. The city says it has already spent millions “combating OxyContin and heroin abuse after deaths from painkillers and heroin use spiked and street crimes increased.”

Everett, Washington officials are claiming in the suit that Purdue Pharma knowingly allowed pills to be funneled into the black market.

Everett’s lawsuit, now in federal court in Seattle, accuses Purdue Pharma of gross negligence and nuisance.

The city seeks to hold the company accountable, the lawsuit alleges, for ‘supplying OxyContin to obviously suspicious pharmacies and physicians and enabling the illegal diversion of OxyContin into the black market’ and into Everett, despite a company program to track suspicious flows.

Everett contends that Purdue Pharma “created a market for addicts that didn’t exist until the company let its pills flood the streets” and says the pharmaceutical company must pay for the damages that its drug has caused to the community.

A decade ago, Purdue Pharmaceuticals had to pay more than $630 million in legal fees to the government after they willfully misrepresented the drug’s addiction potential.

Jay Williams was one helluva basketball player, winning the Naismith College Player of the Year (2002) and a National Championship as a member of the Duke Blue Devils (2001). We did it everyone, we’ve finally made it to the NCAA Tournament! Well, sort of. I think that these games are kind of crap, but whatever it’s still college basketball in March, so I can’t complain too much. Anyway, tonight should provide us with a great matchup between two #11 seeds as Wake Forest and Kansas State square off in Dayton, Ohio.

To be honest, I’m not really sure that Wake Forest should have even made the tournament. They only had one marquee win this year by beating #8 Louisville, which was the only ranked team that they beat this year, and they finished with a 9-9 ACC record and 19-13 record overall, but hey good for them for making their way into the field of 68. The Demon Deacons are led by sophomore forward John Collins and his 18.9 points a game and 9.8 rebounds. If Wake Forest wants any chance of winning and advancing in the tourney, they’re really going to need to make the right adjustments to their defense that gives up 77.9 points a game, which is 301st in the NCAA…yikes.

Their record may not show it, but Kansas State has been kind of sneaky good this year. They’ve beaten Baylor twice, West Virginia, and even took Kansas to the wire two different times. They aren’t great offensively, but they play tough defense, and seem to play their best in the biggest games. They were the last team to get a bid into the tourney, but I think they not only have a great shot at winning tonight, but have a great chance at upsetting the #6 seed Cincinnati on Friday. We should have a great game on our hands tonight, so let’s take a look and see where you can stream the game online.

The University of Minnesota has become the latest American college to get rid of the classic homecoming king and queen, and is replacing them with “gender-neutral royals.”

UM officials are calling it a move toward “gender inclusivity” that promotes “a spirit of inclusion.” According to the university, this change allows the school to select the best student representatives for the U of M based on campus and community involvement, regardless of gender.

Like years past, UM will name 10 students to Homecoming court, except the mix won’t necessarily be five men and five women. Those 10 will then be paired at random to compete in homecoming events. Their performance, in addition to a university-wide vote, will determine the two royals.

During last night’s play-in game, University of New Orleans forward Travin Thibodeaux choked one of his teammates during a timeout.

Thibodeaux was so angry with teammate Christavious Gill after he didn’t pass him the ball in their matchup against Mount Saint Mary’s that during the following timeout, Thibodeaux grabbed Gill by the neck before being pulled off by officials.

Thibodeaux, who is 6’5″, was reprimanded by coaches by being benched for the rest of the game.

New Orleans went on to lose the game to Mount Saint Mary’s by a final score of 67-66.

Carleton University, a Canadian college, has decided to remove the weight scale at its campus gym last week. Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, says the decision is “in keeping with current fitness and social trends,” according to a sign posted where the scale used to stand.

Bruce Marshall, the manager of health and wellness at Carleton University, said that focusing only on weight could only have a negative impact on students.

“We don’t believe being fixated on weight has any positive effect on your health and well-being,” Marshall said. “The body is an amazing machine and even when we are dieting and training it will often find a homeostasis at a certain weight.”

Furthermore, Marshall added that it can take a long time to see a change in weight.

“It takes weeks, even months to make a permanent change in your weight. So why obsess about it?” he said. “Why not look at other indicators?”

According to Marshall, other indicators to look at include girth measurements, which can change “dramatically,” without much of a weight change. This involves measuring the circumference of areas such as the torso, legs, and arms to record progress.

He added people can also set goals in terms of cardiovascular fitness and overall strength, instead of only focusing on the number on the scale.

Samar El Faki, a first-year student in the enriched support program, said in a message to the Charlatan that she was appalled at some of the comments. She said she believes removing the scale is a valid request to accommodate people with eating disorders.

“Scales are very triggering,” she said. “I think people are being insensitive because they simply don’t understand. They think eating disorders are a choice when they are actually a serious illness.”

Kimberly Naquin, a 27-year-old teacher at a Louisiana high school, has confessed to both having sex with a teenage student and conducting a year-long lesbian relationship with the 16-year-old teenage girl.

Naquin, 27, a history teacher at Destrehan High School in St Charles Parish near New Orleans, pled guilty to charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and sexual conduct between a teacher and a female student.

Authorities in Kenner and St. Charles Parish arrested Naquin, the daughter of former St. Charles Parish School Board President Dennis Naquin, on January 15, 2016, after relatives of the now-17-year-old girl reported the relationship.

Investigators in St. Charles accused Naquin of several sexual encounters in a classroom at the high school. The district attorney’s office in St. Charles has not yet formally charged her in that parish, according to Frank DeSalvo, Naquin’s attorney.

The victim testified in court Monday that Naquin, her world history teacher, first began trying to kindle a relationship with her one week after her 16th birthday, according to the Jefferson Parish district attorney’s office.

“I thought she was cool because she paid special attention to me,” the girl told the court.

Naquin is required to register as a sex offender for 15 years, undergo a psychological evaluation, and is not allowed to have contact with the victim for one year, the judge ordered.

Newly released surveillance footage shows a heroic security guard in Illinois stopping a bank robbery dead in its tracks. Brian Harrison, the security guard, can be seen shooting a bank robber dead after he threatened the customers and bank employees with a gun.

The armed robber, identified as Laurence Turner, 34, went into Alpine Bank in Rockford, Illinois, with with a gun and wearing a ski mask. The moment he aimed his weapon at the tellers behind the counter, Harrison took out his own firearm and shot the criminal, killing him at the scene.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato said the security guard, Brian Harrison, a retired Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department deputy, shot and killed the suspect, Laurence Turner, 34, of Rockford in self-defense and in defense of others.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said that Turner also robbed at gunpoint Rockford financial institutions and a retailer: Mincemoyer Jewelers on Nov. 23, when a laptop was stolen; Harvard State Bank on Nov. 28, when an undisclosed amount of cash was taken; and Members Alliance Credit Union on Dec. 16, when money was stolen.

Five people– three Apline employees, a customer at the drive-through, and Harrison were in the bank when the shooting occurred. No one other than Turner was was injured.

Tyler Price, a 21-year-old West Virginia man, has been charged with sexual assault after admitting to date rape while he was interviewing for a position as a police officer.

On February 8, during a pre-employment interview, Price confessed to an officer that he had sex with a woman after going out drinking and recorded the encounter on his phone. According to WCHS reports, police learned during a February 23 interview with the woman that she did not consent to the sexual encounter and had no knowledge of a recording. According to the criminal complaint, the woman told police she had consumed quite a bit of alcohol on the night the sexual assault took place.

South Charleston police say Price contacted the woman after the interview and confessed to the crime.

Price, of Nitro, West Virignia, was charged with second-degree sexual assault and is being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond.

German police say a suspicious package found at the Federal Ministry of Finance contained explosives.

According to police, had the package been opened, it would have led to “serious injuries.”

“It would have been appropriate to cause serious injuries when opening the package,” the officials said. 

Via RT:

The package was addressed to Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble but was flagged by security services in the ministry’s post office, according to German newspaper, Bild. Wires were seen protruding from the package as it passed through an X-ray machine, the report said.

According to Bild, an evacuation of the ministry was carried out before the package was removed and taken to Grunewald by explosive experts for examination. There have been no reports of injuries so far.

“The first investigation results show that the package contained a so-called explosives mixture, which is frequently used to produce pyrotechnics. It was designed to cause considerable injuries when the package was opened,” police said in a statement.
