We’ve got an absolute doozy of a fight on tap for tonight, as Keith Thurman will face off against Danny Garcia in a welterweight unification bout. These are two of the top pound-for-pound boxers on the planet, with Thurman being the current WBA champion and Garcia holding the WBC belt.
A fight of this magnitude is extremely rare and is the definition of must-see television. Check out this quote from Dan Rafael to help put this bout into perspective, “The fight is just the 10th unification bout in the division’s star-studded history. Among them: Leonard-Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Trinidad and Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao.”
That is a murderer’s row of boxing legends. This high stakes bout is scheduled for 12 rounds, and the fists will be flying on CBS. That’s right, folks. We’ve got two undefeated fighters throwing down in a unification bout on regular ass TV. No pay-per-view, no HBO, no Showtime, just regular ass TV. #Blessed
Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) is from Clearwater, Florida, and he’s arguably the most devastating power puncher in the welterweight division. He’s made three successful title defenses, and his most recent fight was his most impressive victory yet. On June 25, 2016, Thurman defeated Shawn Porter via unanimous decision to retain his WBA belt.
Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he’s held belts in two weight classes over his career. On March 24, 2012, Garcia defeated Erik Morales via unanimous decision to win the WBC light welterweight title. And in his very next fight, Garcia unified light welterweight titles by knocking out Amir Khan in the fourth round of their July 14, 2012 bout.
Garcia would later move up to welterweight, and he won the WBC title after beating Robert Guerrero via unanimous decision on January 23, 2016. He’s fought once since then, knocking out Samuel Vargas in the 7th round of a non-title bout.
