As Northwestern showed us last night with their amazing buzzer beater, it is officially March. The games are getting more dramatic and the stakes are higher, and that is most definitely the case when it comes to conference tournaments. There are 32 automatic bids available to the conference tournament champions, and for the Horizon League, that is the only team that will get to participate in the big dance.

The Horizon League Tournament will take place from Friday, March 3 through Tuesday, March 7 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Oakland will be the favorite of the 10-team field, as they tied Valparaiso for first in the regular season with a 14-4 record in conference play. Oakland went 2-0 against Valpo in the regular season to earn the 1-seed in the tournament.

3-seed Green Bay will also be a team to watch, as they won it all last year as a 4-seed. They beat Wright State 78-69 in the Horizon League Championship, then got promptly blown out 92-65 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Texas Tech.

I’ll obviously be pulling for Valpo because this Bryce Drew buzzer beater will always give me goosebumps.

Am I an immoral person for kind-of-sort-of-maybe admiring this dude who stole a Maserati during a test drive? You know what, don’t answer that. I’m running with it.

After an “exhaustive” search (air quotes for sarcasm), police have recovered a $150,000 2016 Maserati Gran Turismo Maserati that was stolen during a test drive. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I promise this is not a scene from an upcoming Will Ferrell comedy. While this crime definitely earns points for hilarity, it has to be docked for a lack of proper planning. It’s important to remember when you’re cruising down the highway in a stolen car, the car dealership still has your driver’s license.

According to the arrest report, 45-year-old Michael McGilvary II hopped into a test drive at a Fort Lauderdale dealership in Florida on February 21. Soon he stopped at a Boca Raton resort, boasting to the salesman about his boat. But when the dealership employee stepped out of the car at the dock, McGilvary sped away.

Police have not commented on the car’s condition or exactly how they recovered the vehicle (which positively tickles the imagination). The Sun Sentinel reports that McGilvary is back in custody on charges of grand theft and for violating parole in a federal drug case.

So, kids, take this as a valuable lesson. If you’re going to steal a luxury automobile, make sure you don’t leave your driver’s license behind as incriminating evidence.

Mary Fletcher, a 42-year-old dental assistant, has been charged with rape after she allegedly had sex with three teenagers.

According to the allegations, Fletcher, who goes by Debbie, slept with three California high school football players after meeting them while working with the team photographer.

Fletcher was arrested after police received several complaints that she had sexual contact with students on the Mount Shasta High School football team. Authorities say the 42-year-old mother slept with the students over the course of several weeks. She was also accused of dissuading a witness.

Fletcher was arrested on Tuesday, February 28 in McCloud on four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and one count of dissuading a witness and was held at the Siskiyou County Jail until she was released on $10,500 bail.

District Attorney Kirk Andrus spoke to NBC, saying that the case is sensitive due to the age differences between the parties:

“I have spoken with some of the victims… and you know, these cases are always challenging. I mean especially for a young person that are by definition not prepared for this kind of relationship. Relationship is probably the wrong word but they’re not prepared for this kind of interaction with an adult,” he said.

The John Jay High School in Brooklyn, New York, has been evacuated due to a bomb threat. Follow here for the full-story and all important updates.

What Is Happening?

The John Jay High School in Brooklyn, New York has been evacuated following a bomb threat made in the school. The NYPD Bomb Squad is currently on the scene investigating.

Police and firefighters arrived at the high school around 12:20 P.M. EST on Thursday. Reportedly, a student in the Millennium High School, located on the John Jay Educational Facility campus, received a call from someone who said there was a bomb at the school. The school was immediately evacuated and the surrounding streets were blocked off. Bomb squads are currently sweeping the campus.

“The threat is being investigated, just to be on the cautious side,” a police spokesperson told Patch.com.

John Jay High School’s main building was constructed in 1902. It is located at 237 Seventh Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City.

The actual John Jay High School was closed in 2004 due to poor student performance. The John Jay Educational Campus now houses the Secondary School for Law, the Secondary School for Journalism, Park Slope Collegiate and Millennium Brooklyn High School.

The 2017 World Baseball Classic is set to begin on Monday, March 6, so what better time than now to start preparing for the international showdown. This will be the fourth edition of the WBC, and the USA is still looking for their first medal.

Japan won the first two WBCs in 2006 and 2009, and the Dominican Republic got on the board with a 2013 victory. The closest the US has gotten to receiving a medal was a 4th place finish at the 2009 WBC.

The USA’s medal drought might finally come to an end in 2017, as in my opinion, they are fielding their best team yet. They’ve got strong starting pitching, lights-out relievers, speed, defense, and a ton of power. Manager Jim Leyland has an embarrassment of riches on his hands, and I can’t wait to watch the US wipe the floor with the WBC competition.

It must be something in the pizza.

For some inexplicable reason, Chuck E. Cheese’s is no stranger to criminal activity down in Tampa Bay, Florida. According to WFTS, some chains are attracting emergency personnel once a week on average.

The ABC affiliate examined five separate locations in the Bay Area, pulling calls for service for all of last year. What they found is honestly pretty remarkable.

“Emergency personnel were called to the Clearwater and Wesley Chapel locations 18 times each. They were called to the address in Carrollwood 38 times. The St. Petersburg location had five calls for service and the Brandon location had 61,” the report reads. Right off the bat, that’s an alarming amount of calls. But dig a little deeper and you’ll soon realize just how nuts it truly is.

WFTS compared these numbers to local gentleman’s clubs and, well, just take a look for yourself.

“Charlotte’s Gentleman’s Club on E. Nebraska Avenue had 0 calls for service in 2016. But Mons Venus, The Penthouse Club and Goodies had a total of 27 assaults, batteries, fights and disturbances between them. Still, none had more than the Brandon Chuck E. Cheese’s.”

Somehow, a restaurant chain for kids is running into more trouble than strip clubs. Logic evades me here.

So, what are all these 911 calls for?

According to the report, deputies were called to the Brandon location 13 times in 2016 for assaults, batteries, fights, and disturbances. A total of 25 of these infractions were reported at the five different addresses combined.

Chuck E. Cheese’s corporate office sent WFTS the following statement:

“We’re committed to the safety of our guests and take great measures to protect the experience children and families have in our restaurants. Incidents are actually very rare and only occur with a very small percentage of those who visit us. And unfortunately, as in kids’ soccer and baseball games across the country, typically such incidents involve adults – not the children. Safety is one of our company’s four core values, and many of the measures we have in place – such as our industry leading Kid Check system – are transparent to our guests to encourage an environment Where A Kid Can Be a Kid.”

Sure, a kid can be a kid at Chuck E. Cheese’s. But it also sounds like drunk adults can be… too drunk and too adult.

Andrew Seely, a first-year student at Central Michigan University, suffered a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction after he was smeared with peanut butter while being hazed at the university’s chapter of Alpha Chi Rho, commonly referred to as Crow.

Seely’s eyes, lips, and face swelled up after members of Alpha Chi Rho hazed him in back October 2016.

The incident happened in October, but Teresa Seely said her son kept the matter to himself until telling family Tuesday night. Now, she said, she wants parents and others to know about what happened to her 19-year-old son, who completed one semester at the Mt. Pleasant school before transferring because of the incident. She declined to identify the new school to protect her son from potential retaliation.

“He could have been killed,” Teresa Seely, his mother, wrote in a Facebook post this morning.

Heather Smith, a spokeswoman for Central Michigan University, said school officials are investigating the incident, however, university police have no jurisdiction because the Alpha Chi Rho house is off-campus. Local law enforcement, the Mt. Pleasant Police, said they have yet to receive a report on the incident.

Alpha Chi Rho was also banned for hazing incidents back in 2011. Similarly, the fraternity applied for reinstatement but was denied by the university and its interfraternity council.

The Detriot Free Press could not reach representatives of the national Alpha Chi Rho fraternity for comment.

Japan won it all in 2006 and 2009 and the Dominican Republic brought home gold in 2013, but I’m thinking that 2017 is the USA’s time to shine. Now that we are all in full agreement that the US is going to whip everybody’s ass in the WBC, let’s breakdown the road they will need to take to hoist that coveted gold medal.

There are 16 nations playing in the 2017 WBC, and they have been evenly divided into four different groups. The USA was placed in Pool C, along with Canada, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. In this stage, it’s a round robin format where each team will play everybody once and the top two teams will advance.

All of the WBC games will be broadcast on the MLB Network, and here’s how the USA’s schedule will shake out in Pool C.

The format is the exact same for the second round of pool play, as each team will play everybody in their pool once and the top two teams will advance.

If the USA can finish in the top two teams in Pool F, they will advance to the championship round. The top two teams from Pool F would meet the top two teams from Pool E. With four teams left, the format would switch to single-elimination to determine the WBC champion.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reports that a Cerritos College football player has been arrested after allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman in Norwalk late last month. See below for the full story.

What Happened?

Kishawn Holmes, 21, was apprehended last Wednesday on suspicion of rape and sexual assault, according to a sheriff’s news release. Holmes, a student and football player at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, is being held on $2 million bail. Investigators said that the incident did not occur on school grounds.

Two counts of rape have been filed by the District Attorney’s Office against Holmes. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 16, according to inmate records.

This isn’t the first time Holmes has found himself in this position. According to the Los Angeles Times, the young man was accused of sex crimes in 2013 while he was a senior at Vista Murrieta High School. Prosecutors told the Times that the then-17-year-old Holmes faced multiple charges. These included two counts of rape, two counts of lewd acts with a child under 14, three counts of false imprisonment, and a count of dissuading a witness. The charges involved six total victims, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

As the cases were in Juvenile Court, the records were not made public.

Special Victims Bureau detectives are investigating this latest incident and “believe there are potentially additional victims related” to the case.

Kishawn Holmes is a 21-year-old student and football player at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. Hip Hop artist Snoop Dogg nicknamed Holmes “Sweet Feet” in 2013 following an impressive high school game in Diamond Bar, California. Holmes currently plays running back for the Falcons.

Tyrese Gibson (you know, that guy who’s like the sixth lead in the Fast & Furious movies? Yeah, him) has a new wife and she is incredibly impressive.

Samantha Lee (now Samantha Lee Gibson) is an absolute bombshell, but she’s much more than just a pretty face (and body). She’s an accomplished social worker who fights human trafficking and makes the rest of us feel inadequate for sitting on the couch all day. Lee is also a New Jersey native repping the east coast, so she’s got our undying love and affection.

Gibson says that the two got hitched in a secret Valentine’s Day ceremony. He announced their nuptials on Facebook in classic 2017 fashion.

TMZ reports that Lee “lives comfortably on a hefty salary.” Apparently, Lee handles “cases for the Division of Family and Children Services” in Georgia. As can be seen on her LinkedIn page, Lee is the “night/weekend” advocate for Project Safe Inc. This entails “Crisis Intervention, Hotline, Shelter Operations, Case Management, Documentation.” The new bride received her Master’s in social work from the University of Georgia and graduated with a degree in psychology in 2012.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon History

Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded by Noble Leslie DeVotie, Nathan Elams Cockrell, John Barratt Rudulph, John Webb Kerr, Samuel Marion Dennis, Wade Hampton Foster, Abner Edwin Patton, and Thomas Chappell Cook on March 9, 1856 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Not only did DeVotie have the coolest name of the bunch, but he was also the leader.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon grew rapidly, as they had their first national convention in 1858. They expanded north of the Mason-Dixon line for the first time in 1883, establishing a chapter at Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College). They’ve since grown to have chapters in all 50 states. In March of 2014, Sigma Alpha Epsilon eliminated pledging, becoming the first large national fraternity to do so.

In 1927, Sigma Alpha Epsilon created the Levere Memorial Foundation. According to their website, the foundation was developed to “generate funds for the construction and maintenance of the Levere Memorial Temple and its artifacts; to establish and grant scholarships to deserving undergraduate and graduate brothers; and to ‘receive funds, donations, bequests, legacies, endowments, and gifts, both real and personal for the furtherance of the objects and purposes of the Foundation.'”

On December 31, 2013, Snapchat was hacked and 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers were leaked to the internet. The company later reached an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) following the leak. This ordeal exposed some of the app’s security issues, but did not significantly impact the company’s continued growth.

2014

In 2014, Spiegel and Murphy started planning a massive IPO for Snap (the new and improved name for Snapchat) worth a potential $25 billion. This move made them look downright prophetic after they had previously turned down a $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook.

2017

Snapchat went public on March 2, 2017 under the symbol SNAP on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company priced its initial public offering (IPO) at $17 a share, giving the company a market valuation of around $24 billion (more than double that of rival Twitter and the highest US valuation of a tech company since Facebook in 2012). Siegel sold 16 million shares in Snap’s IPO, bringing in about $272 million. Even after the sale, Siegel still owns north of 210 million shares, worth around $3.6 billion. As Chief Executive of Snap, Siegel will receive an additional 3% of shares as a bonus over the next three years. This is worth an estimated $633 million.

As of the afternoon of Thursday, March 2, Snap was trading at $24 a share, a 41.2 percent increase from its opening price.

All told, this makes Siegel worth around $4 billion.

College is a time of self-discovery and development; it’s also a time of excessive binge drinking and firm denials of one’s own alcoholism. As such, it’s only natural for these two worlds to collide during your four (or more, no judgement) years of school.

Drinking habits change over time; you’re not going to be the same alcohol guzzler at 22 that you were at 18. If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice you go through four distinct drinking stages in college.

Shall we take a look at them?

Freshman Year

Freshman year isn’t about acclimating to college; it isn’t about growing as a person or getting good grades. Freshman year is about one thing and one thing only: beer.

Even with a fake ID, the most accessible alcohol at 18-years-old will always be beer. It’s cheap, you can buy it in bulk and it’s easily divided amongst a group of thirsty dorm-mates.  There’s a reason the freshman 15 exists and it doesn’t have anything to do with campus food. It’s all from those beer calories in your liquid diet.

Now there are certain upsides to this emphasis on beer. As I mentioned, it’s cheap and easy to get for the most part. It’s perfect for binge drinking carried out over several days as one is wont to do with their first taste of freedom. It also lends itself well to all manners of drinking games, which occupies quite a bit of your focus freshman year. The downside is you’ll be forced to walk around with a bloated gut all night and the Over/Under for your piss breaks is set at five.

Still, beer is that old friend who’s always there for you.

Sophomore Year

Okay, now you have a year of college drinking under your belt. You’re a little older, a little wiser, and that Sociology class you took last semester convinced you that you’re a high-functioning member of society (you’re not). You can’t still be stuck in the doldrums of low class beer drinking at this stage in your life.

Sophomore year is usually the time you start getting into hard liquor. Fraternities are throwing bottles and bondage parties, off-campus ragers are popping off and you just don’t have the time or the unsophisticated palate to slug 13 beers. You need something a little bit more…mature.

Hard liquor gets the job done like no other. Instead of drinking beer over several hours, you can drink several shots in one hour. You get drunker quicker and aren’t left with that nauseating beer after taste. The only downside is…you get drunker quicker, often make a fool of yourself and are left with debilitating hangovers.

Junior Year

Aw snap. You’re 21 now, get after it!

The 21 mark is practically holy territory here in the States.  After you hit that birthday, you still drink copious amounts of alcohol, only now you do it in a retail business establishment that serves alcoholic beverages rather than in someone’s seedy basement. Yeah, you fancy, huh?

Once you start hitting the bar scene, your drink of choice may change. Instead of beer or shots of fireball, you may become interested in actual cocktails. I’m talking Old Fashions, Moscow Mules, Martinis and all that good stuff. These drinks really do taste better and you come to appreciate the act of slowly sipping rather than pounding at furious speeds. The big downside about the bar scene, however, is that it is expensive AF. You try going out in New York City these days without dropping a Benjamin.

Senior Year

I’m not saying you don’t still go hard your senior year, it’s just…not quite as hard for a lot of students. Before, if your buddy asked you to get hammered on a Tuesday night, you didn’t hesitate. But senior year, your priorities may have changed. Responses like “Sorry man, I’m hanging out with my girl tonight” or “Can’t bro, I’ve got my internship tomorrow morning” are uttered with much more frequency at this stage in your life.

Yes, of course you still hit the bar and take shots and chug beer every now and then. But you’re more likely to enjoy a few beers while watching The Walking Dead than go on a week long bender. It’s all just part of growing up…unfortunately.

Conference tournament season is underway, as 32 teams are scratching and clawing to earn one of those coveted automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. When it comes to the MAAC Tournament, Monmouth will be the heavy favorite. They were the regular season MAAC champs, posting a gaudy 18-2 record in conference play. Monmouth will have revenge on their mind this year, as Iona upset them in the 2016 championship game in a 79-76 nail-biter.

Phoebe Jo Chapman, a former high school teacher in Valdosta, Georgia, who was accused of sleeping with three of her students, was able to accept a plea bargain in which she serves no jail time.

Chapman, 44, turned herself into the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office in Valdosta in April 2015 and was initially charged with three counts of sexual assault.

Chapman, who resigned in 2015  from Lowndes High School, pled guilty second-degree cruelty to children. Under the plea bargain, Chapman will not go to jail and will not even have to register as a sex offender.

She was arrested in April of 2015 after she was accused of having sex with three students while she was a teacher at Lowndes High School. It was three separate incidents with three separate boys, all of which who graduated.

“Most of these students have now graduated, but each of the alleged instances was confirmed to have occurred while the children were students at the high school,” Lt. Stryde Jones said.

Chapman was fined $2,000 and sentenced to four years of probation.

Hollywood funny man and all around amazing human being Will Ferrell will be dropping by USC later this year to deliver the Commencement address.

A source from University Student Affairs confirmed the news today with The Tab, as did a second source who works with President Nikias.

Ferrell earned a B.A. in sports broadcasting from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in 1989. He was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and, as can be seen below, was an absolute no-doubt-about-it frat star.

Since Ferrell’s graduation, he has maintained a close relationship with the program, routinely popping up at big sporting events and meeting with the Trojans teams to offer support and hilarity. Most notably, Ferrell would give motivational speeches during Pete Carroll’s successful tenure as football coach. The comedian always arrives rocking full cardinal and gold colors and has even dressed as Tommy Trojan from time to time. That’s an unconditional love for your alma mater right there.

In 2015, Ferrell was almost trampled by the football team as he led them out of the tunnel, but laughed about it later.

Ferrell has previously given a commencement speech at Harvard University in 2003, but this will be the first time he does so for his own school. Pretty legendary if you ask me.

We can’t lie, we’re insanely jealous of all the graduating USC students out there. Ferrell is going to crush this speech.
