Where the hell did January go? Seemed like yesterday that the football season kicked off, and here we are at the final few days of the season leading up to the Super Bowl. Anywho, with the NFL being the talk of the sports world this week, we get to kick off Super Bowl week on the hardwood, in what should be a good ACC showdown between the #21 Duke Blue Devils, and the #20 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Both teams have been quite inconsistent this year and could use a conference win as a confidence booster.
Duke started the year off with a bang, winning 12 of their first 13 games, but have since slipped up losing four of their last eight, including two games to unranked opponents. They avoided a second consecutive loss this past Saturday by squeaking out a win against Wake Forest 85-83, but the game probably shouldn’t have been that close in the first place. Coach K disciplined his players for their poor play in recent weeks, but it was such a slap on the wrist penalty, that I don’t know how he expects that to change anything. While I still think Duke is going to be in the tournament when March rolls around, they better get their act together soon or else they’ll probably be headed home after the first round. If sophomore guard Luke Kennard can continue to keep up his elevated level of play this year, the Blue Devils can hang around with anyone, but they can’t keep relying on him to carry the load. They’ll need much more contributions from some of their highly touted freshman going forward.
Things have not been going great for Notre Dame as of late. They’ve lost three of their last four games, including two in a row, with the last one being to unranked Georgia Tech. They’ve struggled with scoring their past two games as they haven’t even been able to crack 62 points in either or their last two games, both of which they lost. Fortunately for the Fighting Irish, they have a good conference record this year at 6-3, and have the advantage of playing at home tonight in what should be a pretty hostile crowd. I hate to sound like Captain Obvious here, but it would be in Notre Dame’s best interest to not lost tonight, because losing three games in a row, especially at this point in the season, could be terrible for their confidence and it could result in them free falling and missing the tournament altogether. I’m not sure that’ll happen, but you never know. A win tonight would be huge to get them back on track and give them the confidence going into their big weekend matchup on the road at #12 North Carolina. Two teams in desperate need of a win… Sounds like we’re going to have a good one on our hands tonight.
