If you believed any and all reports coming from the hundreds of media outlets yesterday, you would have thought that Lane Kiffin won the head coaching job at The University of Houston. Well, apparently he didn’t because this morning the University of Houston announced that they had chosen Major Applewhite as their new head coach.

The news came first from Hunter Yuracheck, the Vice President for Athletics at the University of Houston. See his tweet below.

Obviously this is a big surprise for people who’ve been following the story, although it makes perfect sense that a guy like Lane Kiffin wouldn’t be going to the University of Houston Cougars. He’s still on the table to become the head coach at LSU or USF, but we can see the draw of a program like USF, which would benefit immensely from having a relatively young, likable (?) coach like Lane at their school. It would be his program to own and to take to bigger heights. LSU, on the other hand, already has a phenomenal program but comes with much more pressure to perform at a higher level.

Last night the Oakland Raiders fans traveled to Arrowhead Stadium to play the Kansas City Chiefs for the right to be the #1 seed in the AFC West. The Raiders got down early but tried to fight back at the end. Fighting is something that the Raiders and their fans are accustomed to doing, as you can see here in the upper-level seats of Arrowhead.

A couple of things to note: 1.) Raiders fans will travel. 2.) Raiders fans won’t back down from a fight. 3.) You should back down from a fight if the people are at a higher level than you. 4.) Apparently it’s really easy to fall down multiple rows of bleachers if you get tossed at Arrowhead.

For Sheridan Godfrey, choosing a career was easy. The Miss COED 2017 semifinalist has always been fascinated by outer space, which is why she’s pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado – Boulder.

Embarking on a successful career in a largely male-dominated field is certainly a challenge, but Sheridan is making it look easy. The 19-year-old is just 10 hours away from receiving her pilot’s license and earned the Fly With Amelia scholarship to help her afford it. As a cheerleader, she says she’s often underestimated, yet she’s proving she’s a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

This year, 50 percent of newest group of NASA astronauts are women, and in a few years, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sheridan is one of them. Read on to learn more about Sheridan below, and be sure to check back daily as we get to know each of our semifinalists a bit better.

Running Ralphie at every football game! Ralphie is a live Buffalo and being on the cheer team I get to run behind her before every game. It’s definitely the most amazing tradition CU has. 

What’s your most memorable moment at school?

Beating Utah and claiming the PAC-12 South title! It was the first time our school sold out the stadium since 2008 and I have never experienced such incredible energy at a game before. There were fireworks and everyone stormed the field after the big win. Definitely something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Do you have any secret talents?

I can fall asleep anytime anywhere no matter what time of day it is. It’s a blessing and a curse. 

What’s your biggest accomplishment thus far?

Being awarded the Fly With Amelia scholarship in order to get my pilots license! I’ve always wanted to learn to fly and winning that scholarship helped me achieve it financially. I only need about 10 more hours until I’m licensed!

Greek Life at Tufts University is back in the spotlight for the second time in one week. Unlike the first story, which centered around the hazing of pledges, now it’s the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority that is getting the negative attention. It’s come to our attention that since the beginning of the fall 2016 semester, 40 members of the Tufts AOII sorority have dropped from the organization in protest of the fact that their AOII Nationals delayed the approval of a transgender student, identified as Harper Hopkins.

Eventually, AOII extended an invitation to Hopkins, but many in the Tufts community and AOII sorority believe that it was too little and too late. The sorority’s national office explained that the delay was due to the fact that it lacked a policy on admitting transgender students. Here’s a statement that AOII Nationals emailed to Heat Street:

“The chapter will continue to recruit members who embrace diversity, are passionate about social action, and are dedicated to maintaining their high standards of excellence. … Alpha Omicron Pi believes that all individuals are unique, with inherent worth and dignity, and should be treated with respect.”

For her part, Hopkins initially accepted the bid, but quit soon thereafter, claiming that her initial treatment was a major issue. She believed AOII believed in “systematic inequality and structural violence” and decried AOII’s “oppressive policies and behavior.” Tufts University has also backed Hopkins on the issue.

“Tufts University has been named one of the best universities in the country for LGBTQ students by a number of organizations,” said Patrick Collins, a Tufts University spokesman. “We believe that students should be able to join the Greek Life organization with which they identify.”

From a personal level, I think that AOII Nationals was dealt a tough hand. The truth is that, in today’s age, transgender issues are already a hot topic, so it was important for the sorority to take some time to figure out where they would stand on admitting or denying transgender students. While you could argue that AOII could have accepted Hopkins on an individual basis (which they could have), I think that legally AOII Nationals were trying to figure out the answer to the bigger question. They shouldn’t really be penalized for that.

I believe that if Greek Life manages to last another decade, you’ll soon see a split between fraternities and sororities who are willing to accept transgender students and those who aren’t. I’ll be the first to admit that the idea of transgender identities/gender fluidity is confusing for me, but I recognize that it’s definitely an important topic to discuss.

If the AOII sisters wanted Harper Hopkins to join, then she should have been accepted first and dealt with by Nationals afterward (if at all). An ex-girlfriend of mine once told me that her father, a famous doctor, was part of a Yale University FIJI class who accepted the first black pledge. The way that she told it, the FIJI Nationals was so outraged at the decision that they revoked the charter. Obviously, her father and that class were on the right side of history, and allegedly they wore it as a badge of pride, so I say that the sisters should accept Hopkins if they want, and silently challenge their Nationals office to do something about it.

Calling all fans of Planet of the Apes! A brand new trailer revealing the next entry in the long-running franchise has finally been released.

20th Century Fox launched a new trailer for the next movie in the popular Planet of the Apes series of reboot films. This iteration will star actors Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Gabriel Chavarria, and Judy Greer.

One UPS driver in Robertsville, Missouri is doing much more than just delivering packages safely and securely during the holiday season. This past Tuesday, a UPS driver managed to save a woman and her three-year-old child from being held captive by the woman’s abusive and dangerous husband, James Tyler Jordan.

What Happened?

According to police, Jordan’s wife alleges that her husband refused to let her leave the house. Allegedly, Jordan had beaten her, threatened to kill her, threatened to shoot her with his pistol, and sexually assaulted her. She alleges that the abuse lasted for days, until a UPS driver came to pick up a package that had been previously scheduled. When the driver came to the door, Jordan pointed the gun at his wife’s back as she talked to the driver.

Rather than say something out loud for help, which would have been suicide, she wrote “Call 911” on the package and handed it to him. The driver wasted no time doing as he was asked.

When police arrived at the scene, they arrested Jordan and saved his wife and child. For his disgusting crimes, James Jordan has been charged with domestic assault, sodomy without consent, felonious restraint, unlawful use of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. He’s being held on $100k bond.

Here’s the statement from UPS:

We are grateful this UPS driver with more than a decade of service followed protocol when he saw a customer in distress and contacted authorities after he saw her message to contact 9-1-1.

Our drivers are very familiar with their routes, and are trained to be aware of their surroundings and respond to requests for assistance.

The fact that the holidays are coming means that you’re more than likely to see a couple of videos caught by CCTV cameras of companies like UPS, FedEx, or the USPS, all depicting drivers treating their packages like garbage. This good press for UPS couldn’t have come at a better time.

YouTuber PewDiePie made headline news this week after he announced that he’d be deleting his YouTube channel after reaching 50 million subscribers. And guess what? On Friday, December 9, he did what no one has ever done in the history of the internet: he reached 50 million subscribers.

So as promised, PewDiePie went ahead and deleted his YouTube channel. There’s just one catch… It’s not the channel that everyone thought he was talking about. Instead, he deleted one of his other channels “Jacksepticeye2.” He revealed the prank on his newest video, released today. Watch it below.

JackSepticEye2 is a joke on the YouTube channel of one of his YouTube friends JackSepticEye. Even though the channel was pretty much a joke, it still reached well over a million subscribers, which has got to be pretty frustrating to people who don’t even have a thousand subs.

A few pieces of business to discuss before I get into my picks. There are only three games tonight (all of which are terrible), and because the spreads for Saturday’s game don’t come out until tomorrow, I’m going to pick the three games tonight, and then an additional two games tomorrow. Hopefully, I don’t have to do this every week, so I’m guessing that I’ll probably just pick Saturday’s games in the future. My second order of business is that I actually picked five games last week, but it ended up not getting published which was good because I went 1-4. So like any reasonable person, you better believe I’m not counting that towards my record. Anyways, the games tonight suck so I’m not sure how these picks will go, but we have a better slate of games tomorrow, so if it gets ugly tonight I should be able to salvage it on Saturday. This week’s picks are:

Minnesota -13 vs Georgia Southern

If this was football I’d consider taking Georgia Southern, but it’s not, so I’m going with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota is sitting at 8-1 on the season, including wins against Arkansas and Florida State, who are a combined 16-2 on the season. The Big Ten is just a better conference than the Sun Belt, so based off of that logic, I’m assuming Minnesota is the better team. I couldn’t tell you anything about Georgia Southern’s basketball team, so just take the Gophers.

Wake Forest -9.5 @ UNC Greensboro

Probably a stupid pick, but whatever. Back in the day, I used to be a huge Wake Forest fan, mostly because I loved Chris Paul. I even went to a Wake Forest basketball camp with my friend one summer and had a great time, so that’s pretty much the only reason why I’m going with the Demon Deacons. I stopped liking Chris Paul after he went to the Clippers when he should have been a Laker, which I blame on that asshole David Stern for blocking that trade, and which eventually cost Kobe Bryant another ring. Not really relevant to the pick, but I just wanted to get it off my chest.

I see this game going one of two ways, either it’s a great game that Notre Dame is able to keep close but eventually loses, or Nova beats the living hell out of them. I’m going with the latter because I like how Villanova is home, and not to mention they’re the reigning National Champs.

Georgetown -4 vs La Salle – Lock of the Week

I actually don’t know a damn thing about either team, but Georgetown is a better program from top to bottom so I have to take them here as my Lock of the Week. Georgetown might actually suck this year, but any sane person would not take freaking La Salle here.

I did a good job with my first week of picks, so hopefully I can string together a couple of wins this week. I don’t feel too confident about these picks but screw it. Let’s do this, Goddammit.

Are you that person in the park constantly looking down at a phone trying to capture Pokémon? Well, if you are that person then I have some good news for you! The Pokémon GO tracking system is constantly growing to almost every corner of the globe. But now, the system works differently. Trainers now have the “nearby” tracker or their app as well as a “sightings” tracker. So, what’s the difference between these two trackers?

Here is a quick rundown for you Pokémon fanatics. This updated version of the game’s tracking system contains the “nearby” tracker, which helps you track down your Pokémon prey by telling you the nearest PokeStop. This feature was released months back, but only for some players in San Francisco. Niantic was going to release this feature as the primary tracking system for the game, but they received plenty of complaints from fans, which really altered their plans. Many rural users had only a few PokeStops nearby and were very upset because they were having a harder time finding Pokémon to catch.

Here is a look at that “nearby” tracking system:

For the rural Pokémon players among us, you’re going to love the “sightings” tracking system. This system works on a much higher refresh rate, so the Pokémon listed on the screen are more likely to be in the area than not. This feature alerts you of Pokémon in precisely a 200-meter radius from where you’re standing, sitting, or scrolling. These very close Pokémon are displayed on your screen next to blades of grass. You won’t need a PokeStop because you’ll have all the info you need on your quest to catch ’em all!

If you’ve already used the “nearby” and or “sightings” tracking system then you’ll probably notice one distinct detail. These tracking systems switch automatically and you’ll have no control over which one you can choose. Sometimes, you’ll have both tracking systems available at the same time, which would be the case if you’re near a few PokeStops. But if you’re in an area flooded with PokeStops then the “nearby” tracking system will be the only system available to you (specifically if there are more than three Pokémon in the vicinity).

Many Pokémon Go fans are happy with these developments but are still a little sore on the fact that they can’t toggle through these two tracking systems. These fans would like the right to choose when it comes to their Pokémon tracking system. But still, many enthusiasts are more than satisfied with this updated system for Pokémon GO.

Niantic released a statement confirming that these latest updates to the Pokémon GO tracking system were based on fans’ feedback. “To provide a better experience when searching for Pokémon in the real world, we have also made some changes to the way the Nearby Pokémon feature functions when there are only a few PokéStops in range,” said the Pokémon GO team “We will continue to review the feedback submitted on our official social media accounts and in other channels and make changes if necessary.”

Many fans embraced these developments, while other Pokémon hunters are still pretty damn butthurt. But Niantic proved that they do listen to their fans pleas and complaints. So, let your butthurt be known and you will probably see greater Go updates in the future!

As a Professor, you can bet that one of the most annoying things in the world is students showing up late to your lecture. It’s disrespectful, it slows the flow of my talk, and it distracts the rest of the students who showed up on time.

As a student, you better believe that I’m going to be late to class–if I show up at all.

So it really just comes down to a battle between who’s got the stronger conviction. In the case of this one Chinese professor, identified at Lu Ping at Hexi University, he wins by a landslide. According to the description of his video, this teacher stood outside his classroom and forced his late students to slap each other in face before they entered. And if they didn’t slap each other hard enough? They had to do it again and again until he was satisfied.

Obviously this would never fly here in the United States, but I love how those girls tried to be sneaky as f*ck by using their hair for helmets. Guess what? He’s not falling for it. He’s making you hit each other like ten times. As for the guys, they know the deal. One big slap and they get the green light. If it’s not audible it never happened.

UFC 206: Holloway vs. Pettis is tonight’s mixed martial arts event produced by the UFC, being held at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

A UFC Light Heavyweight Championship rematch between the current champion Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson was originally expected to headline the event. The pairing met previously in May 2015 at UFC 187 with Cormier winning the fight (and the vacant title) via submission in the third round. However, on November 25, Cormier pulled out due to injury and the bout was scrapped. Promotion officials reportedly tried to book Johnson against former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi, but the former opted to wait for Cormier to return. Therefore, a featherweight bout between Max Holloway and former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettiswas shifted to the headlining spot. Another component was added to the fight, as it was promoted to an interim UFC Featherweight Championship status. The current champion (as well as lightweight champion) Conor McGregor vacated his title and former champion/current interim titleholder José Aldo became the undisputed champion.

UFC 206 Fight Card

The regular college football season has come and gone, and now all that’s left is for the Bowl games to be played. Before that, though, the biggest award in all of college football (and possibly sports) will be announced, and we will have a new Heisman Trophy winner.

Yesterday, five finalists were announced to be up for the prestigious award. Among those names are Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Waton, Oklahoma quarterback (you notice a pattern here) Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook, and Michigan linebacker/defensive back/punt returner/whatever else they need him to do Jabrill Peppers. It is a loaded field with great players, but it’s pretty safe to rule out both Peppers and Westbrook because the award has typically gone to quarterbacks for the most part, with the exception of a few running backs here and there. That’s not to say that Peppers and Westbrook aren’t great players and aren’t worthy of being finalists, I just think that anyone with half a brain realizes that the trophy isn’t going to either of them.

Having said all of that, I think it’s pretty safe to rule out Baker Mayfield as well, which means the award is going to come down to Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson. Watson had better team success this year and even beat Jackson head-to-head earlier in the season, but I think the award is Jackson’s to lose. His team may have struggled down the stretch, but he put up ridiculous statistics this year by throwing 30 touchdowns and running in for 21 himself. 51 total touchdowns is just absurd to me, and I think it’s safe to say that Jackson will be the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner. The Army is set to battle the Navy in a war of football this Saturday afternoon. That’s right, two branches of the military will clash and look for gridiron glory. But this is far from their first meeting. They first faced off on November 10, 1890, so this sports rivalry dates back more than 100 years. And now, they do battle in Baltimore inside the M&T Bank Stadium. The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen are looking for war!

They’ve met under the bright lights of a football stadium for 118 games. The Navy currently holds the record for the most wins in their rivalry, earning 60 wins, while the Black Knights have only taken home 49 victories. The Navy Midshipmen are riding high in their feud with 14 consecutive wins, the longest win streak in their rivalry. So, you better believe that the Black Knights are looking to turn their luck around and shine this Saturday afternoon. The Army will need to stockpile their defense and go in for the kill. And the Midshipmen must be proud after all those years of constant victory. Pride may be the fatal flaw that finally takes down the Navy (in a game of football, at least). The Army must be starving for victory!

Let me start by saying LeBron James is the greatest basketball player on earth. But that doesn’t mean this dude isn’t as corny as they come. From the Harlem Shake to the Mannequin Challenge to the Water Bottle Challenge, LeBron has shown a complete inability to let any internet meme go by without absolutely ruining it forever.

Friday night, it was one of the internet’s original memes that finally got the LeBron treatment. With it being 80’s night at the Quicken Loans Arena- because they needed to try to get fans in the building somehow to see the Cavaliers face the Wade-less Miami heat- the Cavaliers proceeded to rickroll their fans in their intro video, with the players performing an absurd version of Rick Astley’s infamous ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ video.

As much as LeBron’s childish sense of humor irks me, I can’t be too mad at any video that features J.R. Smith breaking it down.

But you have to wonder what his teammates really thought when they showed up to the practice facility expecting to play basketball, and LeBron told them that instead they were going to put on these costumes he had made up and shoot the most hilarious video ever.

In case you were under the impression that Army vs. Navy was the only college football game today, South Dakota State today ran the wildest trick play since ‘The Annexation of Puerto Rico’ in their first-round FCS playoff game.

Their top-seeded opponent, North Dakota State, have won the past five FCS Championships, including the past two seasons with Carson Wentz under center.  So their rivals to the south knew they’d have to pull every trick out of the bag if they were going to pull off the upset. And that is why the South Dakota State coaching staff drew this wily play up, which their players executed perfectly for a touchdown.

Here’s the absurd play from another angle.

Unfortunately for all you South Dakota State fans, that first-quarter touchdown was pretty much that team’s only highlight of the day. The Jackrabbits currently lost 36-10.

SantaCon 2016 is today in many cities across the world, with the biggest pub crawl of all of course going down in New York City.

Christmas came early for movie-lovers this week when a whole batch of mouth-watering new trailers were gifted to us. I’ve been posting new trailers every week for the past several months, and this is easily the most exciting collection of trailers I’ve written about yet.

Let’s dig in.

Baywatch

Baywatch is back, but it’s not quite what you’d expect. The movie version of the iconic series is a 21 Jump Street-like comedy starring The Rock and Zach Efron. Unfortunately, a lot of the laugh-lines in the trailer fell flat for me. Don’t think I’m going to see this one, but it’ll probably be entertaining for fans of the original show.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The Guardians are back in this sequel to what was probably the funniest Marvel movie ever made. It looks like the second one should follow in the footsteps of its predecessor by delivering a great mix of adventure and laughs. You can Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters on Cinco de Mayo.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

As long as people keep seeing them, they’ll keep making new SpiderMan movies. But what’s so exciting about this upcoming flick starring Tom Holland is that it’s the first SpiderMan movie to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer even includes an appearance from Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Should be awesome.

Transformers: The Lost Knight

Transformers is another franchise that seemingly could pump out movies forever. Apparently Mark Wahlberg replaced Shia LaBeouf in the last movie and is reprising his role in this one, but you’re paying your money to badass robots anyway so who cares who the actors are? Director Michael Bay was given an absurd $260 million dollar budget to play with so you can bet there will be an explosion or two.
