So What Is Labor Day Anyway?

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day is a bittersweet holiday. It’s the day on the calendar that signals summer has come to a close but on the other hand it means one last long weekend blowoff to end it on a high note.  Yet few know why we celebrate the holiday and how it came about.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is a tribute to the contributions of the American workforce.

Labor Day history’s dates back to the late 19th century. It remains disputed whether the founder was Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a machinist, founded the holiday in the early 1880’s.

According to the Department of Labor’s website , the first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. New York introduced the first Labor Day state bill in its legislature, but Oregon was the first state to pass Labor Day into law in 1887. After numerous other states followed suit in the ensuing years, Congress passed an act in 1894 that established Labor Day as a federal holiday to be observed the first Monday in September every year.

Have a great time this Labor Day, and be sure to keep in mind the hardworking people that the day is meant to honor.

Syracuse Ties Colgate In Rivalry After 66-Year Winning Streak…

syracuse win colgate 2016

College football season launched with a huge night for Syracuse — and it wasn’t just about Moe Neal’s 49-yard touchdown run at the Carrier Dome. The really big deal is that Syracuse has finally tied the record in their years of rivalry with Colgate University. [photo: Brett Carlsen/Getty]

Well, that’s a big deal in New York State — especially since it took 30 years. There was a time way back when Colgate was a big football power. Like, way way back. Syracuse has been beating the Raiders on the field regularly since 1950, but it’s still taken until 2016 for the series to finally get tied at 31-31-5.

There weren’t a lot of tense moments in Syracuse’s 33-7 win. It was just another irritating game for Colgate, who had only their decades-old lead to keep them comfort in what’s really the lamest rivalry in college football. Still, Colgate has an entire year to keep Syracuse from taking the lead, right? Yeah. That’s a long shot. We’ll still probably end up betting on them, though…

NFL Predictions 2016: Seattle Seahawks Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, Seattle Seahawks
When fans think of the Seattle Seahawks, they see a team that went to two straight Super Bowls and was within one yard of winning both. The 2015 season saw a different team that went 10-6 and didn’t get back to the big game. As the 2016 season approaches, Seattle will be looking to get back to the biggest game of them all with most of their stars back on the roster. Here are the three biggest questions around the Seahawks going into the new season.

Will Thomas Rawls replace Marshawn Lynch effectively?

Lynch’s retirement makes Rawls the lead horse in the Seattle backfield. He showed great potential last season in relief of Lynch but now knows that it is all up to him. The Seahawks love to run the ball and Rawls needs to put up a very similar season to what Lynch has been in recent years.

Can the defense be No. 1 again?

Last season, the Seahawks gave up just 17.3 points per game on average which was best in the NFL. With a defensive backfield that makes it hard to pass the ball, there is no reason why this can’t happen again. Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas lead a group that continues to stop opposing offenses with shocking regularity.

Is Russell Wilson ready to take the next step?

This may be the biggest question of them all. Wilson has been leaning on the run game his whole career. With no Lynch, he may need to throw the ball a lot more this season. Is Wilson can become a 4,000-yard passer, the Seahawks will have a dimension that they haven’t had during their Super Bowl runs.

NFL Predictions 2016: Washington Redskins Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, Washington Redskins
It was a surprising 2015 season for the Washington Redskins as the team finished 9-7 and won the NFC East. As the 2016 season gets ready to start, Washington will be looking to build on their success from a year ago. Kirk Cousins has another year under his belt and the running game appears to have finally figured its proper way. Here are the four biggest questions that surround Washington going into a very interesting 2016 season.

Who is the lead running back?

This should be Matt Jones all season long with no more Alfred Morris. Jones has shown flashes of potential but nothing too exciting after that. If Jones can prove he is something that can be counted for over 1,000 yards rushing and at least 400 more in the pass game, the Redskins will have something.

What’s up with Cousins?

There are no quarterback issues in Washington. Cousins is the starter and that’s the bottom line. If he can prove his worth as an elite starter will be the next story to watch. He can be the 4,500-yard passer that the Redskins want with the weapons he has on offense. This will be worth watching.

How’s the defense?

It wasn’t special last season as the team scored just 9 more points than they gave up. Hopefully, the team’s pickup of Josh Norman changes their luck and that shutdown corner is what the team needs while facing Dez Bryant and Odell Beckham twice a season. It could mean the difference between a nine-win season and one with 11 or 12 wins.

NFL Predictions 2016: Tennessee Titans Saints Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, Tennessee Titans
It was another rough season for the Tennessee Titans in 2015 as the team finished 3-13 and in last place in the AFC South. The 2016 season could be one where the team finally turns things around and gets back into playoff contention. Marcus Mariota is looking for a great quarterback for the team’s future and the run game should be improved in 2016. Here are the three biggest questions surrounding Tennessee going into the new year.

How will DeMarco Murray do in his new role?

Murray is fighting with Derrick Henry for the starting running back job and many believe that Henry should be the starter already. This is a big year for Murray to prove that he wasn’t a one-year wonder. If he can start out strong, all the criticism will go out the window.

Is Mariota ready for Year 2?

While he wasn’t the best throwing the ball last season with the team being just 25th in the NFL in pass yards per game, he began showing more and more signs of progress as the season went on. The run game’s improvement should take some pressure off of him and allow a more free-flowing team going into the new year.

Will the defense stop the opposition?

This was a problem last season as the team gave up 423 points or 26.4 points per game. There aren’t a lot of great teams in the AFC South so any improvement with the defense could easily lead to two or three more wins. The Titans may surprise many people this season.

NFL Predictions 2016: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
There were many things that fans saw in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season that would make people think positive things are coming. The team went 6-10 and finally had their running game going behind Doug Martin. As the new season arrives, there are many things to think about with the Bucs and their chances in the NFC South. Here are the three biggest questions that surround Tampa Bay going into the 2016 campaign.

Is Jameis Winston ready to become an elite quarterback?

Winston began to show last season what he could do under center late in the year. His second season will be a big test in how far he has truly come. He has the weapons in the pass game to become a 4,000-yard passer sooner than later. Will that happen in 2016? Very possible.

Will Martin stay healthy?

This is something that has plagued the Bucs over Martin’s career. When he is healthy, he is a monster on the ground. A healthy Martin could rush for 1,500 yards this year with the way the pass game is looking. This is a major piece of the puzzle for Tampa Bay in 2016.

Can the defense step up?

It was a rough year for the D in 2015, giving up 26.1 points a game. That has to change especially in a division with three high-powered offenses. The team used their first two draft picks on solid defensive players who should have an impact right away which could make Tampa Bay a true playoff contender.

Vikings Trade For Eagles QB Sam Bradford: Full Story & Must-See Details

sam bradford traded to vikings

After the devastating season-ending injury to Minnesota Vikings starting QB Teddy Bridgewater, the Vikings have traded for Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Sam Bradford was expected to be the Eagles starting QB, and with the season starting next weekend, this trade comes as a big surprise.

The former Heisman Trophy winner will rejoin his Oklahoma teammate Adrian Peterson in the Vikings backfield.

Chase Daniel is expected to take over as the Eagles starting QB, and 2016 second overall draft pick Carson Wentz is waiting in the wings.

ESPN’s reporter extraordinaire Adam Schefter broke the story. He reports that the Eagles will receive a first-round pick in 2017 and a conditional fourth-rounder in 2018. Certainly a hefty price for Bradford’s services.

New Movie Trailers: ‘Mascots,’‘Save The Date’& More [VIDEOS]

mascots trailer christopher guest video

Summer is over (practically) and we’re heading into college football and classier films for the awards season. That’s okay with us. We’re kind of hungover from a summer full of debating Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters. Now it’s time to enjoying some more modest fare — to the point that the biggest trailer of the week is for a movie that isn’t even playing theaters…

Mascots

Netflix continues to take on the theaters by grabbing the new Christopher Guest mocumentary — although Mascots does show off a few flaws in the director’s aging style. Waiting for Gufman and Best of Show remain classics, and Spinal Tap probably still counts as the first, but not even our love for college mascots has us convinced that Guest didn’t need Netflix as badly as the service needed Guest. Still, there are enough good gags here that we expect we’ll be watching on October 13…

USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage

Here’s the latest inherently funny trailer because it features Nicolas Cage — who, let’s admit, at least still gives his all while picking up paychecks in various productions. This one is a movie they’ve been talking about making since Jaws was a hit with Quint’s story about the doomed seamen of the USS Indianapolis. This looks like the sharks only take up half the movie in the story about the lost sailors, so it’s smart that a living meme like Cage takes over the rest…

Save The Date

Yeah, we’d line up for a big studio rom-com with Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie. That would be some smart marketing right there. But while this one’s about wedding plans, but this trailer also is clearly establishing its indie credentials. There’s even a scruffy musician planning to propose after a concert — and the gal’s response already makes this  a feel-good event. We’ll put up with the heavy hipster vibe just to be reassured Millennials are having sex…

Shut In

And here’s a token horror film, with Naomi Watts drowning a little kid in the bathtub just like she did in The Ring Two — so maybe it’s revenge for her not getting cast in the upcoming Rings. This new film is a psychological thriller where she’s isolated during a New England winter with a catatonic kid and another little boy who might be a ghost or just a figment or her imagination. We know it’s not an apparition from an old VHS tape, at least…

NFL Predictions 2016: San Francisco 49ers Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have seen their share of distractions over this offseason and preseason with Colin Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem and a pass game led by Kaepernick that was very bad last season. Coming off of a 5-11 season and a last place finish in the NFC West, San Francisco needs something big to happen in 2016 or major changes will be coming. Here are the three biggest questions around the 49ers going into the new season.

Will Kaepernick even be on the roster when the season ends?

The bad publicity around him and his decision may harm San Francisco in the long run. He has shown in the past that he can be a good quarterback but he will need to pick it up in a big way this year. The team averaged just 207.3 yards per game through the air last year. A bad start and Kaepernick could be traded.

Can the offense wake up?

The lowest-scoring team in the NFL last season with just 15 points a game, the 49ers need big seasons from Kaepernick and Carlos Hyde. The team didn’t draft any offense play makers in the first five rounds of the draft so that won’t help any. It’s up to the players that were already on the roster to make something big happen in a tough division.

Is Hyde the key to the whole season?

The running back showed last season that he had a lot of potential to become a star in the NFL. The time to take it to the next level has come however. If Hyde can rush for over 1,000 yards and take pressure off the pass game, the 49ers have a chance to get close to the .500 mark in 2016.

NFL Predictions 2016: San Diego Chargers Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, San Diego Chargers
The 2015 season was one that the San Diego Chargers would likely love to forget with their 4-12 record. As the 2016 season gets ready to start, San Diego will hope that first round draft pick Joey Bosa will be able to catch on to the defense as quickly as possible to help a struggling defense from a year ago. Here are the three biggest questions around the Chargers going into the upcoming season.

Will the run game even get better?

The Chargers struggled on the ground last season, ranking second-to-last in rush yards per game with just 84.9 yards per game. Melvin Gordon was drafted last season to improve that and it didn’t happen. If it doesn’t improve this year, San Diego could be in line for another long year.

Can Philip Rivers have another big season?

While the run game was bad, Rivers and the pass game ranked fourth in the NFL in pass yards per game. That means a very one-sided offense and that is trouble in today’s league. If Rivers has to throw for 5,000 yards for the Chargers to go .500, there will be major problems.

Will Bosa make a difference?

He was the No. 3 overall pick after all. He is going to be expected to rush the passer with reckless abandon. He held out almost all of training camp though and is way behind. If he gets up to speed quickly, Bosa could make the defense leaps and bounds better which could lead to a better season than many had expected.

NFL Predictions 2016: Pittsburgh Steelers Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have turned into one of the biggest passing teams in the whole NFL over the past few years with Ben Roethlisberger looking for Antonio Brown all the time. After a 10-6 season in 2015, Pittsburgh will be looking to capture the AFC North and trying to get back to the Super Bowl to give Big Ben another chance for a ring. Here are the three biggest questions surrounding the Steelers going into the 2016 season.

How will LeVeon Bell’s suspension affect the team?

Bell is gone for the first three games and while things worked out with DeAngelo Williams last season, Bell has proved that he is one of the best running backs in the whole NFL. There could be even more passing coming from the offense until Week 4 arrives.

How many catches for Antonio Brown?

It is clear that Brown could break the NFL record for most catches in a season this year. The offense is centered around the Roethlisberger to Brown connection. Could he end up with 150 catches? This is very possible, especially with the way the Steelers offense has been operating in recent years.

Can the defense improve any?

Last season, Pittsburgh gave up around 20 points a game. The offense ripping it up helps offset the defense giving up points. If the defense can shut it down even more this season, the offense won’t need more points and a 12-win season could be in the cards for a team playing on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Lil Wayne is one of the most commercially successful rappers of all-time, so when he sent out cryptic tweets this morning hinting at retirement, the world was buzzing to figure out what he meant.

A clearly distressed Wayne first set the internet ablaze with this cryptic tweet at 4:06 a.m EST:

Just over two hours later, the rapper tweeted this:

With the world on edge after his first two tweets, Weezy then sent out this reassuring tweet for the people worried about Weezy’s current state:

It remains unclear what Lil Wayne meant by these alarming tweets, and whether or not the interpretation that he is retiring is correct. Wayne has been embattled in recent years with Birdman, so there’s some speculation that the tweets are expressing his continued frustration of still being under contract with his former mentor.

Perhaps, Wayne will clarify the intentions of his tweets in the coming days. Then again, maybe not. The enigmatic nature of all this has certainly helped Weezy get ample publicity.

For many casual fans, the USC Trojans vs. Alabama Crimson Tide is the biggest college football game of the weekend. The game will air on ABC at 8:00 P.M. EST and will take place at a somewhat neutral site of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX. That being said, it’s in the South and we know that ‘Bama fans love to travel, so it’s probably going to be a home game for the Crimson Tide.

As of now, Vegas has the Crimson tide as 9- or 10-point favorites against the Trojans, which seems to be a number that I’m feeling pretty good about. I wouldn’t bet the game either way in terms of the spread, but I might bet the under. This game feels like it could get out of control pretty quickly, leading to some desperate USC moves and some stellar Alabama interceptions.

We’ll be watching this game closely, though, that’s for sure. Check out how to live stream the game below.

NFL Predictions 2016: New Orleans Saints Season Preview & Outlook

NFL Predictions 2016, New Orleans Saints
There are some things that are consistent to life around the NFL. The New Orleans Saints having a high-powered offense led by Drew Brees and their defense struggling all the time. Both of those things happened again in 2015 as New Orleans finished 7-9. As the 2016 season arrives, the Saints will be looking to turn things around and get into a place where New Orleans can be a playoff team. Here are the three burning questions for the Saints looking forward.

Will Brees do it again?

The man with the bionic right shoulder threw for 4,870 yards and 32 touchdowns last season. He may play until he is 40 or beyond at the rate he is going. The Saints don’t have a ton of great options in the pass game so Brees will need to pick and choose who he is throwing to but a 5,000-yard season will happen again.

Is Mark Ingram back to 100% health?

Injuries hampered the former Alabama running back last season as he rushed for just 769 yards. He is someone that the Saints are going to be counted on moving forward to take a lot of pressure off of Brees. He must stay on the field all season long and get over the 1,000-yard mark on the ground.

Is the defense ever going to be good?

The Saints gave up nearly 30 points a game last season which was worst in the NFL. There is simply too much that needs to be done. The team’s first round draft pick in Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins must be a stud in the middle early on or it could be another very long season down in the Bayou.

University Of Miami QB Busted On DUI — Plus Cocaine Possession…

Virginia v Miami

Tucker Beirne was in too big of a hurry to prove he was ready for the NFL — as the 19-year-old University of Miami football player was pulled over by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Tavernier very early on the morning of February 3rd. [stadium photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty]

Yeah, that’s just hours before everyone was celebrating the start of college football. Tucker just got carried away a little too early, it seems, with cops saying that he was driving under the influence and was carrying around some cocaine.

Beirne wasn’t set to play today againstFlorida A&M at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, of course. He’s just a freshman who was signed up after starting all four years as QB at Aspen High School in Colorado.

Now he’s looking set to marry Peg and start selling shoes in Chicago — or so we’re guessing. Officially, the team has no comment on the guy’s arrest. We’re expecting some repercussions, though.

Number 3 Oklahoma Fall To Houston In Opener

While the preseason college football rankings are completely speculative, number 3 Oklahoma seemed like a good bet to be among the four programs included in the end-of-season four team playoff.  But the Sooners failed their first test of the season, falling 33-23in their season opener to #15 Houston  at NRG stadium in Houston.

The win marks the first time in school history that Houston has knocked off two top 10 teams in a row, having beaten then-number nine Florida State in the Peach Bowl.

Though Houston were the better team for most of the game, the game turned totally in their favor when the Cougars returned a missed field goal attempt 100 yards for a touchdown.

The bad news, of course, is that one loss in college football is massive for a team with championship hopes. The silver lining for Oklahoma is that if they play to the level that’s expected of them come Big 12 season, an early September loss will be a distant memory at the end of the season.

#15 Houston defeat #3 Oklahoma 33-23

Katharine McPhee hottest photos ocean drive video 7

Katharine McPhee must be a very important actress, because she’s able to keep us tuning into Scorpion ever week. That’s despite the wizards at CBS managing to turn the series about hipster espionage agents into something that plays as old as their geriatric crime procedurals.

The former American Idol star knew how to get our attention as she moved into film, too — starring in COED-friendly movies like The House Bunny and Shark Night 3D.

Katherine is also a natural as part of Ocean Drive magazine’s parade of hot ladies providing fascinating interviews. She’s all over the new issue, which also has a hot online presence with a typically alluring original video for the magazine.

We cared enough to pull out our favorite shots, but you need to see it for yourself. So check out Katherine’s hottest stills from the Ocean Drive shoot–and check out the fine magazine’s work with the equally fine Emily RatajkowskiErin Heatherton, Anne V, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Jenna Dewan-Tatum

WATCH: Carrot Mascot At Minor League Baseball Game Lays Vicious Hit On Two Rival Vegetables

carrot big hit

The NFL used to be America’s favorite beacon for primal violence. We could count on a few boneshaking hits every weekend to make us a smile. But after the league changed its rules to reduce debilitating violence, the league has been devoid of the epic collisions that everyone loves.

Apparently the place to be if you want to see those kinds of hits is somehow a minor league baseball park. Seriously, the carrot in this carrot is the new Ray Lewis. He gives absolutely zero f**ks, lighting up a pepper and potato at the same time to prove once and for all who the supreme vegetable is.

When I first saw the headline while browsing the internet I assumed it’d be a decent hit made much more notable by the fact that it was by a guy in a carrot suit. But no, this hit is straight out of the Madden 2000 intro, and the fact that it’s done by a giant carrot is just the cherry (carrot?) on top.

Seriously, this hit is more ruthless than anything we’ll see on the gridiron this season, guaranteed.

Straight up vicious.
