September is always a spectacular month for PS4 soccer fans, with the ever-improving rival franchises, FIFA and PES, dropping their annual entries weeks apart. It’s also time to gear up for next basketball season by playing some NBA 2K17. If you’re looking to explore some of the greatest games of last generation, BioShock: The Collection rounds up the trilogy and makes the games look and play the best they ever have. But the most exciting release of all may be the alien conquest defense epic, XCOM 2, which finally makes its way to the PS4 after starting on the PC.
Here’s a look at the best PS4 games coming out in September:
5. FIFA 17
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Canada
Release date: September 27
Always the soccer game that includes the most licensed teams, players and stadiums, FIFA looks to up the ante by fixing its sluggish gameplay and improving tackle detection and passing accuracy. Career mode will also get a sizable boost, with the likenesses of real-life managers popping up and more real-life teams including Japan’s J1 league, making appearances.
4. BioShock: The Collection
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Irrational Games
Release date: September 13
BioShock, BioShock 2 and, especially, BioShock Infinite were three of the best games released on the PS4. Now you can grab all three — each given impressive graphics and gameplay boosts — in one spot. With thrilling combat, rich writing and mind-bending story twists, these deep dives into psychological sci-fi are ones every gamer should take.
3. PES 2017
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
Release date: September 13
After years of playing from behind, last year PES caught up with — and in the eyes of many, surpassed — archrival FIFA. Now we’ll see what the developers at Konami can do to push the genre ahead. Developers are focusing on ratcheting up the goaltending and ball control aspects, adding interface and control system tweaks that makes it more natural to adapt to the flow of the game. There is also more effort on acquiring licenses, nailing down the likes of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona.
2. NBA 2K17
Publisher: 2K Sports
Developer: Visual Concepts
Release date: September 20
After years of struggling to replicate the freestyle, unorthodox excellence of undersized superstars such as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, Visual Concepts is tweaking everything from its skills ratings system to game flow logic. Career mode will also get a boost, beefed up with more behind-the-scenes drama. And while waiting during inbounds plays and loading screens, you can listen to a soundtrack with more than 50 tracks.
1. XCOM 2
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Firaxis Games
Release date: September 6
PC players have been raving about XCOM 2 since it dropped in February, and now PS4 players will get in on the action. Set in a world ravaged by alien conquerors, you lead the global resistance to chip away at the domineering forces and turn the tide in humanity’s favor. All previously released DLC and updates will be included, making this a far better version of the game that debuted for the mouse and keyboard set.
