WWE SummerSlam 2016: Predictions, Analysis & Full Preview

WWE Summerslam 2016 Predictions

(Getty)

WWE SummerSlam 2016 is upon is and it has one of the most promising cards in years. While WrestleMania is WWE’s signature event, SummerSlam in recent years has almost become a bizarro WrestleMania with its own fair share of dream matches.

Predicting the outcomes for the 13 matches (!) on this card is admittedly a tricky proposition. You have to negate what you think should happen and try to get inside the mind of WWE’s 70-year-old maniacal mastermind, one Vince McMahon. And whereas most WWE PPV have some high-profile matches with fairly obvious outcomes, most of this SummerSlam’s big matches can truly go either way.

Alas, here are my predictions for tonight’s huge show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

This match was announced before Lesnar’s foray back into UFC, and is thus the only match to pit a Raw Superstar (Lesnar) against one from SmackDown (Orton). Both came up in WWE Developmental in the same period in the early 2000’s, yet this will be their first match ever.

Lesnar should have been coming back to WWE the conquering hero after his beatdown of Mark Hunt at UFC 201, but the result was marred by failed drug tests. WWE curiously never disciplined Brock for the failed drug test, so it’s conceivable that he will have to take a loss to Orton as his punishment.

But I just can’t pick against Brock Lesnar. The guy has been demolishing everyone in his path the past few years, and I don’t think this is the match when that stops. Orton is a WWE stalwart who has won numerous titles in his career. Orton doesn’t need the rub from beating Lesnar because he’s already a made man himself.

Expect Lesnar to win tonight in a hard-fought match. Then perhaps someone like Roman Reigns, Finn Balor or Seth Rollins will slay the Beast at WrestleMania 33 and become immortal as a result.

Prediction: Brock Lesnar wins clean

Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

Finn Balor unexpectedly earned himself a title shot on his first night on Raw by beating Roman Reigns, and the Demon King (not Demon Kane) could potentially exit his first WWE pay-per-view as the inaugural Universal Champion. Standing in his way will be the smug Seth Rollins, who has a much common with Balor but has been a focal point of WWE programming for the past few years now.

I’m torn on this one. I think the two will have a fantastic match that will have a screwy ending, but I’m not sure who will be the victor. Either Rollins will somehow cheat to win or Balor’s buddies from Japan Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson will come out and help him steal a victory and form a heel Balor Club faction. The company’s been selling those Balor Club t-shirts for the past few years, and will want to establish the Demon King as one of the new era’s top guys so I think the latter will happen. Finn Balor will walk out the first WWE Universal Champion, with Rollins then chasing him for the title as a vengeful babyface.

Prediction: Finn Balor wins with the help of The Club

Dean Ambrose (C) vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE World Championship

WWE.com

(WWE.com)

A lot of people, myself included, were surprised when Ziggler became the number one contender. Ziggler is one of the more talented workers in the company, but a lengthy period in the midcard abyss made him an afterthought. It also seemed like an uphill battle for these two fan favorites to really get the audience invested in the outcome of their match, but a great build on SmackDown Live the past few months has made this a hot feud.

As great as it is to see a reinvigorated Ziggler show a sense of urgency, I don’t foresee him winning the WWE World Championship. Ambrose just defeated his former Shield brothers and is being positioned at the the helm of the new SmackDown brand, and I expect him to win by pinfall after a Dirty Deeds.

Prediction: Dean Ambrose wins clean to retain the title

John Cena vs. AJ Styles

AJ Styles vs. John Cena

(AJ Styles vs. John Cena)

John Cena has a reputation of always coming through in big matches, which makes the fact that he hasn’t won at SummerSlam since 2007 so mind boggling. Styles won their first one-on-one match with the help of The Club at Money In The Bank in June, and then Cena along with Enzo & Cass defeated Styles and The Club at BattleGround.

Look for Cena’s impotency at SummerSlam to continue. Styles won’t get help from The Club this time, but he’ll win via some other nefarious means. Then look for Cena to beat Styles in the blowoff match at the SmackDown exclusive Backlash PPV that is taking place September 11th.

Prediction: AJ Styles wins

Sasha Banks (C) vs. Charlotte for the WWE Women’s Championship

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

In the first Raw after the brand split, Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte to win the Women’s Championship for the first time. It was a great moment that came out of nowhere because most people pegged it to take place at SummerSlam. Nonetheless, Sasha is champion and will look to make her first title defense tonight.

Charlotte’s lackey Dana Brooke has been banned from ringside. I don’t think WWE will hot potato the title right back to Charlotte, so I think The Boss wins what hopefully will be a match on par with some of their best work in NXT. I think Ric Flair, having been shown the curb and disrespected by his hatable daughter a few months ago, will come out and help Sasha win the match. Woooooooooooo!

Prediction: Sasha Banks wins to retain the title with the help of Ric Flair

Rusev (C) vs. Roman Reigns For the United States Championship

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

Roman Reigns slide down the card at SummerSlam has fueled speculation that his stock has fallen in the aftermath of his 30-day suspension for a Wellness Policy violation. While that might be true to some degree, there are only so many available main event spots in a given month, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Reigns back at the top of the card in of the next few pay-per-views.

Reigns beat Rusev in a long, clean match on Raw on Monday which makes me think Rusev will retain in a way that won’t damage Roman too much. I forecast a Rusev disqualification here, to have him retain the title and get some heat. If Rusev does retain, whether Roman continues to pursue the U.S. title or moves onto something bigger will convey a lot about his current standing within the company.

Prediction: Rusev gets disqualified to retain the title

New Day (C) (Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston) vs. The Club (Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson) for WWE Tag Team Championship

(WWE.com)

The New Day’s yearlong run as Tag Team Champions will come to a screeching halt tonight when they go against The Club. The WWE is trying to make The Club matter now that they’re on Raw and AJ Styles is on SmackDown, and the tag team titles would go a long way toward legitimizing them.

With Big E suffering from his groin injury, expect the bald duo to heel it up and end The New Day’s hegemony of the tag team division. Then this feud will probably when a vindictive Big E makes his imminent return. Even if my other prediction of The Balor Club forming doesn’t come to fruition, look for Gallows and Anderson to leave Brooklyn as the new champs.

Prediction: The Club win to become the new WWE Tag Team Champions

Enzo & Big Cass vs. Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

I had been leaning JeriKO on this one, before looking at my picks and realizing I’m picking all heels except for Ambrose and Sasha Banks in all the main card matches (and Balor, who I’m predicting turns heel). Since I don’t think it will hurt Chris Jericho or Kevin Owens to lose as part of a makeshift tag team, I’ll predict Enzo & Cass go over with Jericho taking the pin. Look for this match to potentially open the show to pop Enzo & Cass’s hometown New York crowd.

Prediction: Enzo & Cass win clean; Chris Jericho takes the pin

The Miz (C) vs. Apollo Crews for the Intercontinental Championship

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

Apollo Crews’s in-ring skill has never been in question, but he has suffered from minimal character development. In contrast, while nobody raves about The Miz’s wrestling ability, he’s one of the WWE’s most genuinely hated Superstars. I don’t think anyone is really clamoring for the generic Crews to have a title run, so I’ll peg The Miz to win in typical scummy fashion to try to build some sympathy for Crews.

Prediction: The Miz cheats to win and retains the title

Cesaro vs. Sheamus

Cesaro’s already beat Sheamus clean twice in a row, and now they’re slated to begin a best-of-7 series. Sheamus can’t lose a third time in a row, so expect him to win this. While the matches between these two are always good, a best-of-7 series just feels like filler.

Prediction: Sheamus wins

Sami Zayn & Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

Poor Sami Zayn. His reward for beating Kevin Owens at the past PPV is a kickoff show throw-in match. Him and Neville will at least pick up the win.

Prediction: Sami Zayn & Neville win

Carmella, Becky Lynch & Naomi vs. Natalya & Alexa Bliss

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

Eva Marie has been the central female character thus far on SmackDown, continually avoiding matches. This one she’s going to miss not because of a storyline but because she this week was suspended for 30 days for a wellness violation. Without Eva, this match has been thrown into a state of flux, though Nikki Bella could be making a return here. Look for the babyfaces to win, probably with Becky Lynch making someone tap out to the Dis-arm-her.

American Alpha, The Hype Bros & The Usos vs. Breezango, The Ascension & The Vaudevillains

(WWE.com)

(WWE.com)

This match will be a chance for Chad Gable and Jason Jordan to showcase their immense talent. You can expect the duo, known as American Alpha, to power the good guys to a victory.

Jon Stewart will also be making another appearance at SummerSlam. Enjoy the show!

In last week’s episode of Vice Principals, Neal Gamby (Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) got into a heated argument over their lack of progress in getting Dr. Belinda Brown (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) booted out of North Jackson High. Russell walked out on Gamby, telling him that he’d be better off with a new partner. Russell then started hanging out with a drama teacher named Seychelles (James M. Connor), which made Gamby super jealous.

Gamby would become even more bummed out when Dr. Brown made him change his disciplinary style. Instead of letting him berate and punish students, she made him try a new tactic called “Circles.” In this form of conflict resolution, the students sit in a room filled with bean bag chairs and a popcorn machine to discuss their problems with each other.

While Gamby is moping around in “Circles,” Russell and his family can’t get a decent night’s sleep. Their meathead neighbor Jackie (Owen Harn) won’t stop blaring music late at night while he’s getting his swole on in his garage gym. Russell tried asking politely and calling the police, but nothing would get Jackie to turn down his jams.

In a surprising turn of events, Gamby had a breakthrough during a “Circles” session, and he decided that he needed to apologize to Russell in order to restore their partnership. He went to visit Russell just as he’s taking a beating from Jackie for smashing his stereo into a million pieces. Gamby saves Russell by drilling Jackie with a pair of brass knuckles that he confiscated from a student, but he lets Russell take all of the credit, so he can impress his wife and mother-in-law.

The episode concluded with Gamby and Russell shaking hands, mending their relationship and reuniting in their mission to send Dr. Brown packing. Our dynamic duo is back in business.

SummerSlam 2016 live stream

WWE SummerSlam is tonight’s professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event produced by WWE. It will be the first event under the new WWE brand extension, where they drafted respective rosters for Raw and Smackdown. The event will also crown the first ever WWE Universal Champion. It will be the 29th SummerSlam event, and the second consecutive SummerSlam at this particular venue, which is the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. SummerSlam is considered the WWE’s second biggest event of the year, behind only Wrestlemania in terms of prestige.

On the July 7 episode of SmackDown, Lesnar’s SummerSlam opponent was announced as Randy Orton, who was returning from injury. The match is being sold at a match that has been “15 years in the making’. Despite Lesnar testing positive for a banned substance, the WWE confirmed that the match would still be taking place on July 15. On July 26, WWE confirmed that Lesnar would not be facing any disciplinary action from the WWE as he is exempt from the WWE Wellness Policy due to his status as a part-time performer.

SummerSlam will also crown the first ever WWE Universal Champion. After SmackDown draftee Dean Ambrose retained the WWE World Championship at Battleground against Raw stars Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in a Triple threat match, Raw was left without a world title. Soon there after, Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley created a new championship, the WWE Universal Championship, to serve as Raw’s top championship. The inaugural champion will be crowned at SummerSlam in a singles match; Rollins, as Raw’s #1 draft pick, was automatically set for that match, while his opponent was determined by two Fatal 4-Way matches that night, with Finn Balor coming out on top.

ballers live stream

Ballers is HBO’s most successful comedy in a decade. Not since Entourage has HBO aired a comedy this popular. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, because the Rock is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. Ballers is essentially a sports version of Entourage starring The Rock, so it’s success was virtually built in. The second season premiered on July 17, and is made up of 10, 30-minute episodes. It is currently on it’s 6th of 10 episodes for season 2.

Ballers tells the story of Spencer Strasmore. According to the Ballers website, Ballers is the story of Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL star, as he tries to find the same success as a financial manager for current players in sun-splashed Miami. Heeding his boss Joe’s instruction to “monetize his friendships,” Spencer builds a client base of young phenoms and veteran stars alike, but his role in their lives far exceeds money management as he struggles to help them navigate the many traps that come with life as big-time “ballers.”

Ballers stars Johnson as Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player turned financial manager, Rob Corddry as Joe Krutel, a financial advisor at Anderson Financial who tries hard to fit in, John David Washington as Ricky Jerret, a highly competitive and spiritual NFL player, Omar Miller as Charles Greane, an affable former NFL player who is searching for his next career, and Andy Garcia, who’s character has been described as a “top dog” in the business, and is a rival financial advisor.

Top 5 Goals From Premier League Week Two

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

(Getty)

Week two of the English Premier League has come and gone, and we were graced with some more fantastic goals. These are the 5 best goals from the EPL weekend.

5.) Zlatan Ibrahimovic- Manchester United

The one and only! Zlatan scored goals two and three in Man U’s 2-0 dispatching of Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday, including this picturesque header off a Wayne Rooney cross.

4.) Diego Costa- Chelsea

Another week, another late winner for the EPL’s greatest villain. Cesc Fabregas’s pinpoint through ball is rewarded by a clinical finish by Costa in Chelsea’s 2-1 come-from-behind victory against Watford.

3.) Étienne Capoue- Watford

Watford would lose 2-1 thanks to the aforementioned Diego Costa, but you can’t blame Capoue after this near post blast past Thibaut Courtois.

2.) Sam Vokes- Burnley

What a difference a week makes for Liverpool fans. Last week they were feeling good after a 4-3 win versus Arsenal, but this week they’re sour after their club fell 2-0 to the recently promoted Burnley. This second minute beauty by Sam Vokes had Burnley off to a great start and they never looked back.

1.) Cristhian Stuani- Middlesbrough

The goal of the weekend was the difference in Middlesbrough 2-1 triumph on Sunday against Sunderland. An absolute wonder strike by Stuani.

Margarita Mamun stepped up to win the gold medal for Russia in the 2016 Olympics competition for Rhythmic Gymnastics. We know the distinction in that field because of American beauties like Kristen Shaldybin. Our research suggests that it’s more like being a majorette than a cheerleader. [photo: Laurence Griffiths/Getty]

We also know this is a big win for 20-year-old Margarita, who’s spent a long career in the shadow of teammate Yana Kudryavtseva. Her longtime friendly rival is a triple world champion — and also pretty damn hot. We’re thinking this whole world of Rhythmic Gymnastics deserves a lot more respect. Marvel at Margarita’s fine form below, for example, and start bemoaning the end of this year’s Games…

WWE SummerSlam 2016: Results, Live Updates & Highlights

SummerSlam live updates

(WWE.com)

The time is finally here. SummerSlam 2016 is arrived, and it promises to be an unreal show. From Brock Lesnar-Randy Orton to Dean Ambrose-Dolph Ziggler to Finn Balor- Seth Rollins and much more, this is one of the deepest cards we’ve seen in years.

The Barclays Center was the home to last night’s NXT Takeover and tonight that arena hosts even more great professional wrestling, with SummerSlam’s main card set to begin in Brooklyn at 7 pm EST.

Check this page for full results and match recaps, being updated live throughout the night. As soon as WWE posts them on YouTube, we’ll also add in highlights from all the matches. Below is a link for to how to stream the event live, and a link to my predictions and previews for all the matches. Let’s hope SummerSlam is as good as we all expect it to be.

Brock Lesnar defeats Randy Orton by TKO

As the match was starting to pick up steam, Lesnar delivered some stiff elbows to Orton’s head and busted him open real wide. The crazy amount of bleeding from Orton’s head forced the doctors to call the match off. The ring announcer declared Lesnar the winner by TKO. After the abrupt ending, Shane McMahon came out to tend to Orton and Lesnar F5’d the Smackdown GM to end the show.

Rusev (C) (with Lana) vs. Roman Reigns for the United States Championship never officially begins

The match never officially starts after a chaotic brawl before the bell left Rusev (kayfabe) injured and Reigns was thrown out by the referees. After Rusev was being tended to by the doctors, Reigns came back and sprinted down the ramp to nail Rusev with a spear.

Finn Balor defeats Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship

Finn Balor is the first WWE Universal champion after beating Seth Rollins clean. Balor kicked out of a pedigree earlier in the match, and then the Demon King landed a Coup de Gras to win the new title. The Brooklyn crowd popped big when Balor won, but wasn’t too fond of the red belt he was awarded.

Natalya & Alexa Bliss & Nikki Bella defeats Becky Lynch & Carmella & Naomi by pinfall

Nikki Bella made her comeback as the unannounced competitor taking Eva Marie’s place. After a lengthy match, Alexa Bliss and Natalya cleared the ring to allow Nikki Bella to hit Carmella with her new finisher, a TKO, to get the win for the heel trio.

Dean Ambrose (C) defeats Dolph Ziggler by pinfall to retain the WWE World Championship

Ambrose got the victory over Ziggler after hitting the Dirty Deeds. This was a decent match, but the Brooklyn crowd was quiet throughout.

New Day (C) vs. The Club for the Tag Team Championship ends in a New Day disqualification; New Day retains the titles

Jon Stewart introduced New Day and was in their corner. After some back and forth, Big E made a run-in to draw the disqualification. After beating down Gallows and Anderson, Big E drank from The Club’s jar and spit out the liquid (don’t ask) and then danced with his New Day compadres and Stewart in the ring.

AJ Styles defeats John Cena by pinfall

These two pulled out everything in their arsenal in this classic. Cena kicked out of a Styles Clash on one occasion and a Phenomenal Forearm on another. Conversely, Styles kicked out of two Attitude Adjustments, including one from the top rope. Styles connected on another Styles Clash and made sure to get the 3 count by adding another Phenomenal Forearm for good measure to pick up the pinfall.

The Miz (C) (with Maryse) defeats Apollo Crews by pinfall to retain the Intercontinental Championship

The Miz beat Apollo Crews after landing the Skullcrushing Finale off a distraction. This was by fair the shortest match of the night. I guess it’s not a good omen when people constantly get your name wrong. Poor Apollo Creed.

Charlotte defeats Sasha Banks (C) by pinfall to win the Women’s Championship

Charlotte regained the Women’s Championship after a hellacious match. Sasha had Charlotte in a crossface after a Banks Statement when Charlotte rolled over into a pin to get the 1-2-3.

Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens defeats Enzo & Cass by pinfall

Chris Jericho pinned Enzo after Kevin Owens launched Enzo into the air and Chris Jericho connected on a mid-air codebreaker.

Pre-Show

Sheamus defeated Cesaro

Sami Zayn & Neville defeated The Dudley Boyz

American Alpha & Hype Bros & The Usos defeated Breezango & The Ascension & The Vaudevillains

Jady Duarte is a 20-year-old Rio student who was seen partying with Usain Bolt on the night of his 30th birthday party. Duarte posted several photos of herself and Bolt to the social media messaging application WhatsApp. The photos appeared on several Brazilian websites, including Globo, after Duarte shared them with friends.

Celebrating his gold Medals, as well as his 30th birthday, as well as Duarte, were partying at  the De Bracos Albertas club. The Jamaican sprinter made history in Rio by winning the triple-triple in Rio, taking gold in the 100metres, 200metres, and 4x100m relay.

Speaking to local paper Extra, she said: “He sent a security guard to call me over. We spoke quickly. But at that moment I didn’t know it was him because there were many Jamaicans who looked similar.”

While Kasi Bennett’s boyfriend, Usain Bolt, was in Rio making history, her soon-to-be sister in law spilled the beans on some big news. Christine Bolt-Hylton, Bolt’s sister, revealed that the Jamaican Olympian would get engaged to his girlfriend, Bennett, when he returns from Rio.

Bolt-Hylton said to News Australia,

“I’ve met her and she’s lovely, she’s perfect for Usain. I would say that there’s a very strong possibility they’ll get engaged when he comes home. I last saw them in March at Usain’s restaurant in Jamaica and they looked very comfortable together, sharing their food and laughing and joking”

Clearly Mentally Unstable Man Hangs Off Side Of Building, Calls It “Exercise”

Well, that’s one way to get the blood pumping.  This man’s name is Gabriel Isaac Gutierrez Aray, which I’ve read is Spanish for Daredevil (just kidding).

This nausea-inducing footage from Caracas shows mentally unbalanced Gutierrez Aray, 26, perform a series of exercises including pull-ups with one arm as he hangs high above the city. Even though it’s only Monday, we’re going to award this video as the official NOPE of the week.

According to the Daily Mail, Aray, who has been doing crazy sh*t practicing his discipline from the age of eight, explained why he climbs hundreds of feet above ground in order to practice his exercises: “I want to bring an extra edge to sports and take my concentration and conscience to a whole new level.”

Yeah, sure buddy, whatever you say.

There’s Already Been A Sexual Assault At UVA During Orientation Weekend

A University of Virginia student says that she was sexually assaulted on campus during orientation weekend–a time when freshmen students are supposed to learn about their community, their school, and how to take care of themselves before the beginning of the school year. Obviously, it’s an extremely upsetting thing for the student and other freshmen to have to deal with, but the school didn’t help any matters by waiting a full day before alerting the campus.

What Happened?

According to the student, she was sexually assaulted early Saturday morning, around midnight and 1 A.M. She claims that a man (between the age of 20 to 30 years old), came up behind her with a knife on Emmett Street. He then pulled her to the side, off the sidewalk, and sexually assaulted her.

No one has been arrested, but anyone with information pertaining to the crime has been asked to call Detective Sgt. T. Newberry at (434) 970-3280 or Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000.

How Did UVA Respond?

A lot more people are upset about the way that the school’s email alert system, UVA Alerts, failed to send out alerts to many of the first-year students. Students didn’t get an email alert about the crime until Sunday, more than a day after the crime took place. However, UVA does say that it had sent out a warning, but that first year students weren’t notified because of a glitch. The school says they’ve fixed that now.

What’s more, UVA President Teresa Sullivan failed to mention the attack during her speech to the school on Saturday. However, she did talk about during Convocation Sunday night, a required event for transfer and first-year students. “We condemn it and we will not tolerate it,” Sullivan said.

Conor McGregor’s First Post-Fight Instagram Is Classic Trash-Talking McGregor

The sports world stood still Saturday night as Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz were locked in one of the best fights in the history of the sport. After five rounds of pure brutality, the correct decision was made, and McGregor was scored as the winner. However, in fight like this, there are no real losers, in terms of both money and respect.

Immediately after the fight, both of the outspoken brawlers were back to doing what they do best: talking trash. McGregor opened with a line that may define his career:

Surprise, surprise motherf*ckers! The king is back!

Being the natural promoters that they are, both men were eager to speak on a third fight, however McGregor says a trilogy bout would have to go down at 155. What’s best about the whole thing is that the two fighters have clearly found some sort of mutual respect in the battlefield. McGregor’s Instagram post says as much…

But in classic McGregor fashion, he had to squeeze in a little trash talk.

This guy is the greatest thing to ever happen to the UFC. What a showman.

The King of Fighters XIV Review: Must-See Details & Screenshots

King of Fighters XIV

Let’s be honest, The King of Fighters has never truly been royalty as far as fighting games go. Despite the bluster of the title, it’s been more of an attendant, or at best, a court jester, in the wake of the Street Fighters, Mortal Kombats, SoulCaliburs and Tekkens of the world. That’s not to say the series hasn’t been beloved — and in recent years as the genre has resurged and captivated an entirely new generation that never knew the quarter-popping arcade days — missed. The long-distance sequel, The King of Fighters XIV, straddles the line between relic of the past and fresh new directions.

Game: The King of Fighters XIV
Consoles: PS4 (reviewed)
Publisher: Atlus
Developer: SNK
Release Date: August 22

The 2D Korean fighting series has never been accommodating toward outsiders, with its high-end combos guarded in pre-internet days with the ferocity of frathouse secret handshakes. That sort of defiance remains true in the new game with a punishing tutorial that refuses to grant you access to the game’s goods until you’ve mastered its exhaustive basics. A pro will slash through the phase within 15 minutes, but a casual gamer could take an hour or more to stumble through the more difficult special attacks, some of which require the coordination to hammer out 10-or-more button combos with exquisite timing. The message: This is is no game for tourists, and developers would rather have casual button-mashers stick with Street Fighter V rather than enter its sacred halls. It’s a tough barrier to entry, but the result is a refined community that respects the game and its online opponents.

Once you break down the front door, you will feast on a creatively designed array of fighters that is as deep and varied as any cast of better-known characters from the more popular fighters. Its 48 fighters are divided into 16 regionalized teams, each of which boasts a distinctive arsenal of specials, combos and flourishes. Once you master the basic language of throw cancels, dashes and special meter currency, it becomes easier to switch among several fighters and learn enough nuances to hold your ground as well as you did with your previous character. That leads to a certain blandness, but levels the playing field to weed out any cheapness.

The major weaknesses, the milquetoast visuals, are the one developers seemed to try hardest to combat. Past games in the series were always 2D slugfests with animations and character detail that were close relatives of 1970s Saturday morning superhero cartoons. Now the fighters are granted 3D definition and shading while sticking on a 2D plane, but it doesn’t take much blurring of your eyes to imagine the game on the original Xbox. Even worse, what’s there is not only choppy but boring, as though the animators couldn’t be bothered to give the characters and backgrounds some polish. It could be that they were going for a throwback feel, but whatever the case, this game is the DUFF of fighters.

The King of Fighters XIV may not win any beauty contests, but its bones are as solid as they come, and fans of the series won’t find much to grouse about. There’s an OG grit and fierce determination to stick with the fundamentals that grants its fights a heft and resonance that more popular fighters tend to lack. When you take a severe beatdown, you feel owned in every sense by someone smarter, faster and more clever than you. And when you manage to eke out a victory, you well up with a sense of pride that proves your determination and resolve to put in the work to become a hardened warrior. But even if you almost never find victory in the online arena, take heart and know that by even managing to make it through the tutorial, you’re tougher than the average bruiser.

The King of Fighters XIV Reviews Around The Web:

“fans of of the series should be relieved to know that the rock solid gameplay that the series is known for has remained intact.” –SmashPad

“Through extensive play-testing and balancing, the controls have been streamlined, and the combo and Max Mode mechanics have been overhauled to create the most competitive fighter in SNK’s history.” –Fighters Generation

“King Of Fighters XIV sorely lacks the visual polish of its peers.” –PushSquare

The First Madden 17 Reviews Are In, Here’s What People Are Saying

Madden 17 Reviews

There are few sports games more anticipated each summer than the new versions of Madden, and this year we’re more pumped than ever to play Madden 17. Although the game has absolutely no competition because of their deal with the NFL, the minds behind Madden are always trying to improve the game, making both visual and gameplay tweaks to find the perfect balance. So did they get it right this year?

In Madden 17, the gameplay has been changed to help give a little more presence to the run game. Often times, Madden games come down to the passing game and whether or not the defense can get some timely interceptions. But in Madden 17, EA Sports has added some button-mashing “mini games” to the run game to allow for running backs to break through tackles.

Obviously, we’ll have to see how the running game pans out online, but we’re of the opinion that this is a good start. On top of the running game improvements, Madden 17 has made some changes to Franchise, MUT, and other parts of the game. So did they get it right this year? Let’s see what some of the outlets with early access have to say.

Madden 17 Reviews

GamesRadar: “In the time since acquiring those exclusive rights, the series has been occasionally accused of phoning it in and failing to make significant progress, year to year. With major changes to some of the game’s core mechanics, and an impressive revamp of the now marquee Franchise Mode, Madden 17 has done its best to avoid any such accusations, and succeeded.”

TrustedReviews: “Much of what’s been altered are small steps to further enjoyment, because EA has the fundamentals down. Is it unrecognisable from Madden 16? No. Is it more playable? Yes.”

Forbes:Madden 17 scores in many ways, and there’s more to like than there is to hate, but we can’t ignore the flags on the field. Gameplay, presentation and customization have taken strides, but there’s still work to do.”

Gazette.com: “Although the absence of Ultimate Moments is a significant loss, “Madden 17” is a blast to play. The depth and options in Franchise Mode and the attention to detail EA has put into small yet important factors make it a title I won’t put down anytime soon. If you’re a football fan, you’ll get your money’s worth with this title.”

IGN: “With Madden NFL 17, the series has finally found its comfort zone between the tackles, and offense and defense have reached a great balance. More in video review below.

Breana Dodd is the girlfriend of Tennessee WR Josh Smith, but our boys over at BustedCoverage are calling this NCAA WAG the new Katherine Webb. It’s not too hard to see why one of the best receivers in the SEC would be drawn to the blonde beauty, but judging from the amount of posts she uploads to Instagram, it seems as though Breana knows that she’s also a star.

Currently Breana is a student at UT-Knoxville, majoring in Journalism-Electronic Media.

The Cincinnati Zoo Has Issued A Statement On Harambe Memes And It Is Nothing Short Of Blasphemous

$

It’s been written time and time again: Harambe memes are quite unlike any meme the internet has ever seen. The shelf-life of the Harambe meme is virtually unprecedented in the digital age. I remind you that Harambe was killed on May 28, which is almost three months ago. For perspective, on May 28, 2016, Hodor had just died a couple of days earlier. WE LOST HODOR AND F*CKING HARAMBE IN THE SAME GOD DAMN WEEK (2016 has been just awful). Point being, yeah, it’s been a while since Harambe was sent to the Jungle In The Sky, and yet here we are, still talking, and ironically laughing about it.

However, there is apparently one person who does not appreciate Harambe memes as much as the rest of the world clearly does, and that person is Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard. Speaking to the Associated Press, Cincinnati Zoo director and children’s movie evil school principal Thane Maynard said of the undying meme that is Harambe:

“We are not amused by the memes, petitions and signs about Harambe. Our zoo family is still healing, and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more difficult for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us.”

BRUH. Maybe if your zoo’s fortifications and enclosures weren’t steaming horse sh*t in the first place, your ‘zoo family’ wouldn’t need to be healing at all. Everyone grieves differently, and if 80% of the planet chooses to grieve through meme-ing the iconic gorilla, then so be it.

Do your job next time Maynard, and no memes will come to fruition.

RIP Harambe. We will meme you forever, Cincinnati Zoo be damned.

(Editor’s note: my ‘disparaging’ comments about the zoo and its director are not to be taken seriously, as I am completely kidding. As with everything involving Harambe, it is a total joke.)
