WATCH: USA Women’s 4×100 Drop Baton After Bump From Brazil

US Women Baton Drop Video

The Team USA 4×100 sprinters were a shoo-in to medal at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, more than likely to win the gold in their event. But disaster struck during Thursday’s qualifiers when the Allyson Felix and English Gardner baton exchange was botched. Americans watching gasped in horror as their gold medal squad was seemingly knocked out of podium contention.

But a closer look reveals that it wasn’t so much botched as it was that a Brazilian runner who wasn’t in her lane bumped into Felix, causing her to stumble. Take a look at the video below, the contact happens just before :10 seconds into the video. The USA is in lane #2 and Brazil is in lane #3. You can clearly see the Brazil runner is out of her lane.

Update: Good news everyone! The USA will rerun their qualifier at 8:00 PM EST for a chance to qualify. They must beat China’s time of 42.70.

So now the USA is appealing the decision, but things aren’t looking too good. Here’s Yahoo Sports with the breakdown as to why:

If the appeal fails, the U.S. will be eliminated. If officials determine that there was some sort of foul play — the Brazilian team has already been disqualified, which would seem to be an acknowledgement that there was — they would be presented with a difficult decision. Only eight teams can advance to the final.

In a similar situation in the men’s 4×400-meter relay in 2012, officials allowed nine teams advance to the final due to a protest. A South African runner was tripped by a Kenyan runner during a semifinal heat. The Kenyan team did not qualify for the final, so its disqualification didn’t matter. The South African team was given a ninth spot in the final. But the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium track only has eight lanes.

But of course, none of this matters because unless the United States sends Ryan Lochte back to Brazil, there’s no way the IOC is going to allow the appeal.

According to multiple sources, news broke today that Ryan Lochte lied about being robbed in Rio. Naturally, the internet had a blast, creating the hashtag #LochteGate.

According to ABC News, a Brazilian police source told ABC News that “one of the [US] swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard” on the night of the incident. However,  Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte claimed  that he and three other U.S. swimmers were robbed in a taxi early that morning headed for the Olympic Village in Rio. While Lochte returned to the U.S. Wednesday, the three other swimmers, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and James Feigen, remain in Brazil.

It is now being reported that the whole story was fabricated. Check out the funniest reactions below!

The Security Footage Of Ryan Lochte & Other USA Swimmers At The Rio Gas Station Has Been Released

News broke this morning that Ryan Lochte lied about being robbed in Rio, and just a few hours later, the security footage from the gas station in question was released.

According to ABC News, a Brazilian police source told ABC News that “one of the [U.S.] swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard” on the night of the incident.

Lochte and teammates Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen went to a gas station at about 6 A.M. Sunday, and broke a door to an outside bathroom when they couldn’t get in. They were confronted by an armed security guard, but he did not point the gun at the athletes, the official said. A manager asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door and they gave him an undisclosed amount of money, the official said.

Update #2: We noticed an edit in the video. If you watch the timestamp in the top right corner of the footage, a section of footage is cut out: beginning at 06:09:39 to 06:12. What happened during that time frame has yet to be determined.

Update: According to Daily Mail, US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have told police that they fabricated claims that they and their Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte were robbed at a gas station on Sunday.

According to Globo, the website that published the video (Editor’s Note: this is a rough translation from Portuguese):

Images of a gas station security cameras on Avenue of the Americas, in Barra da Tijuca, west of Rio Zone, show the moment of confusion among the American swimmers and security establishment. According to the video, they come out of the bathroom, which would have made the depredations and then are unable to leave the premises by security.

Aliya Mustafina is a 21-year-old Russian artistic gymnast. She made her first Olympic appearance in 2012, and it was most definitely a debut to remember. She won gold in the uneven bars, silver in the team all-around, bronze in the individual all-around, and bronze in the floor exercise. This amazing performance made her the most decorated gymnast at the 2012 Games.

It was certainly a tough act for Mustafina to follow at the 2016 Summer Olympics, but she was up for the challenge, bringing home three medals from Rio. She won gold in the uneven bars, silver in the team all-around, and bronze in the individual all-around. Counting Olympics, World Championships, European Games, European Championships, and Summer Universiades, Mustafina has now won a whopping 16 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals over her career.

Netherlands Women's Volleyball Team

The Netherlands women’s national volleyball team is currently competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. This is their third Olympic appearance, and they will be looking to bring home their first-ever medal. The Netherlands finished in sixth place in 1992 and in fifth place in 1996, then they went through a 20-year stretch without making the Games.

That drought came to an end in 2016, as the Netherlands finished in second place at the 1st World Qualifier. They went 5-2 over the nine-day tournament in Japan, locking up one of the four Olympic berths.

Since the Games have gotten underway in Rio, the Netherlands have clearly proven that they belong on the biggest stage in sports. They finished in second place in Pool B with a 4-1 record, beating China, Italy, Puerto Rico, and Serbia. Their lone loss came against the USA, who would go on to win Pool B.

The Netherlands were able to advance to the eight-team quarterfinals, and they came out swinging in the knockout stage, eliminating South Korea with a 3-1 victory. Their next match will take place against China on Thursday, August 18 at 9:15 p.m. It should be a doozy, as the Netherlands beat China in a 3-2 nail-biter in their first matchup in group play.

To prepare for the big showdown, take a look at the hottest photos of the Netherlands women’s national volleyball team.

The State Department Has Confirmed The $400 Million Payment Sent To Iran Was Ransom Money

The United States State Dept. says $400M cash payment to Iran was used as leverage for release of Americans; wouldn’t have given money until release. According to USA Today, Spokesman John Kirby said negotiations over the United States’ return of Iranian money from a decades-old frozen account was conducted separately from talks to release the prisoners. But he said the U.S. withheld delivery of the cash as leverage until the U.S. citizens had left Iran. Both events happened on Jan. 17.

This revelation comes after the Wall St. Journal reported that the 4 Americans were released through a deal that included removing sanctions from Iran Air the day before the release of U.S. Pastor Saeed Abedini, Washington Post Tehran Bureau Chief Jason Rezaian, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati and a businessman Nosratollah Khosrawi-Roodsari. All four are Iranian-born, dual U.S.-Iranian citizens who were visiting or working in Iran when they were detained.

President Obama and top officials previously denied that the $400 million dollar payment had anything to do with ransom. Originally, they claimed money was the “first installment of the lifting of sanctions called for by the nuclear agreement with Iran”. The White House had also said the money was owed Iran due to a failed arms deal that predated the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran that brought the current government into power.

Naturally, Republicans pounced on the opportunity. Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, said:

“Reports today confirm what many of us have suspected all along: the $400 million payment to Iran was a ransom payment for four Americans unlawfully held by the ayatollahs. Now, terrorist groups and our adversaries around the world know the U.S. will pay old, hard cash for hostages.”

Donald Trump has yet to comment on the matter.

Tonight in the 200m sprint, Usain Bolt looks to continue his quest for three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay event. On Thursday night, Bolt will be competing in what is maybe his best event: the 200m sprint.

Justin Gatlin, owner of the second-fastest time in 2016, and Yohan Blake, the 2012 silver medalist in this event, both failed to qualify during the semifinals. Competing against Bolt will be rising stars Andre De Grasse of Canada and American LaShawn Merritt, who has clocked the fastest time in the world this year.

The 200 meters is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400 meter track, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques are needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the stadion and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games. The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes rely on different energy systems during the longer sprint.

These Are The Top 5 Excuses Men Use When Cheating, And Wow No Wonder We Always Get Caught

0
0

People cheat. It happens. I’ve cheated. I’ve also been cheated on. For whatever reason though, men are always considered the cheating gender. Maybe it’s because we’re so bad at it. Women are better liars than we are, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Manipulation is embedded in X chromosome. So truthfully, I don’t think men cheat more, I just think women are  better at it.

Case in point: the piss poor excuses men give when doing the dirty. I’ll give you a second to guess the number one excuse we give. Ok. Ready. You got one. The number #1 excuse cheating men give their wives is … playing golf. That’s right, shooting 9 holes with your buddies is the most popular excuse, which 34% of cheating men give their wives– when they’re actually having an affair.

No wonder we always get caught. The results of the survey come from dating website for married people IllicitEncounters.com in a survey of more than 2,000 men. So, without further ado, the top 5 (the other category doesn’t count) horrible, stupid, no-good, excuses cheating men give their wives:

#1 – “I’m going to play golf” (34%)

#2- “I’ve got a business meeting/working late” (27%)

#3- Other (17%)

#4- “I’m going to the bar with my friends” (13%)

#5- “I’m going to the gym” (5%)

#6- “I’m going grocery shopping” (4%)

At 6′ 4″, center striker Robin de Kruijf is not just the prettiest face on the Netherlands’ women’s national volleyball team, but also the best known.  The 22 year-old stunner has been making waves on team Oranje since her debut at the age of seventeen.  She was named Netherlands Player of the Year in 2015.  When Robin’s not stuffing volleyballs down her opponents throats, she spends her time shopping, reading and watch movies.

Robin makes her Olympics debut in Rio as the team failed to qualify in 2008 and 2012.  She competes on Thursday night against China in the Semifinals and hopefully for the gold against Serbia on Saturday.  In the meantime, check out Robin de Kruijf’s hottest photos below.

This Norwegian “Belly Flop” Championship is Complete Insanity

upi.com

Over the weekend, an annual “belly flop” competition took place at a water park in Norway.

The competitors were judged on multiple aspects of their jump, including speed, power, height, distance and their ability to maintain their body as straight as possible when making contact with the water. Resulting it some of the most unique ways to hurt the shit out of your stomach.

How are these people still alive? Belly flopping into a pool in my buddies back yard is definitely in the top 5 worst pains I have ever felt. And I only got about three feet of air. These guys (and girl) jumped from a 30 foot platform and celebrated as if the skin on their chest didn’t just get torn off.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force Review: Must-See Details & Screenshots

0

federation-force-screen

AT E3, fans met Metroid Prime: Federation Force with all the enthusiasm of a telemarketer call when you’re sitting down for dinner. While franchise fans were clamoring for the kind of deep, labyrinthine that the games established, instead they got a gimmicky, multiplayer-driven first-person shooter with shoddy visuals and romper room-sized maps. Many fans shook their heads and gave up, but developers at Next Level Games didn’t let the naysaying stop them from keeping their heads down and spend the next several months making the game as good as it could possibly be. Now it’s time to see whether it was enough.

Game: Metroid Prime: Federation Force
Consoles: 3DS (reviewed)
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Next Level Games
Release Date: August 19

If you’re willing to strip away your prejudices and take the game for what it is, you’ll uncover a surprisingly addictive mech FPS. Heroine Samus Aran rides the bench here in favor of spiritless cyphers who circle-strafe, side-step and lock on moving targets with cannon fire and missiles. This is no Metroid game, but it is by far the most satisfying FPS ever released on the 3DS — not that it has had a heck of a lot of competition. Drab campaign missions are little more than extended tutorials for the real draw, which is co-op and adversarial multiplayer, online and off.

If you happen to find three other like-minded players willing to take the hokey sci-fi trappings seriously, you’ll be in for as thrilling and addictive multiplayer sessions as you’ll find on any 3DS product, including Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 7. The workmanlike visuals make for fluid animations and the netcode allows for swift loads and a breakneck pace to chain one session after another. The reward loop of racking up upgrades and experience to gain a competitive edge is well executed, and everything is balanced enough to make the playing field seem fair and unforgiving. You’ll live and die by your wits and reflexes rather than rubber banding AI or cheap exploits.

The game may be well executed, but there’s only so far something so slim can go. In the grand scheme of things, Federation Force would have been better served as a side mode to a full-blooded, exploration-based 3D Metroid. If fans want that, they have to go all the way back to the GameCube for the Metroid Prime trilogy. And for a 2D Metroid, they have to look back depressingly further. This sort of misuse of the brand comes off as pandering and cheap. Even though Federation Force excels at its modest aspirations, you can’t help but feel like it’s missing something by staying content to stick within the confines of its little sandbox. Time will tell whether it remains in heavy rotation, but it’s easy to imagine even the most passionate fans losing interest after a few weeks. A steady diet of DLC could prevent that dreary fate.

Federation Force seems like a desperate, disabled puppy, eager to please and too endearing to kick out the door. Mark it as a solid guilty pleasure, but by no means a critical addition to your 3DS library. The game benefits as much from its dedicated franchise fan base as it does the dearth of other 3DS options out there. It’s been a slow year for software on the system, and if you’ve worn out all your other downloads and mini-carts, this may well be what you need to dust off the system and get it back in regular rotation in your lower cargo shorts pocket. This may be a poor excuse for a Metroid game, but as a generic but totally competent FPS, it’s a solid effort.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force Reviews Around The Web:

“Taps into the right stuff, effectively remixing Metroid Prime’s first-person formula into a fairly fun shooter for up to four friends.” –IGN

“A surprise in terms of its originality, and its ability to mix shooter controls with an adventure-like level design.” –GameReactor

“Those who look deeper will find an expansion of the series that introduces new and interesting elements.” –The Koalition

Frank Ocean Finally Releases Album, But Not The One Everyone Was Hoping For

Frank Ocean Endless Stream

Frank Ocean has been kind of d*cking us around lately, specifically when it comes to the release of his new album Boys Don’t Cry, or should we say the failure to release it. After multiple pump fakes, some that even got the New York Times to bite, no one’s really too sure when Ocean is going to give us the goods. But at midnight last night, Frank Ocean did release Endless–a 16-track visual album that might be familiar to those who watched his strange live stream a couple weeks ago. The only difference is that there are now full songs accompanying Frank’s staircase building, and they’re kind of dope.

But back to Boys Don’t Cry for a second. According to Rolling Stone, the album won’t actually be called Boys Don’t Cry anymore. Instead, sources told the magazine that same album (now under a different name) will be released sometime this weekend.

The Team USA and Spain Men’s Olympic Basketball Teams will play today in a semifinal for the chance to win gold at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Today’s game tips off at 2:30 PM EST, but coverage begins on NBC Sports at 2:15 PM EST. USA vs Spain will be a premiere showcase for two of the best international teams in the world, so you can expect a stadium full of energy, with fans coming ready to bring the noise.

Despite the Spanish national team’s slow start in the Olympics, they’ve really turned it up to reach their full potential. Obviously they’d like to have both Gasol brothers, but the addition of Nikola Mirotic is certainly nice for the Spaniards. Mirotic absolutely smoked France in the quarterfinals for 23 points, and he adds the threat of a scorer from pretty much anywhere on the court. The leader of the team is (and always will be) Pau Gasol, but his offensive capabilities are going to be hindered somewhat by NBA bigs like DeAndre Jordan and Boogie Cousins. If he wants to have any success against them, he’ll need to get one of them into foul trouble early.

As for the USA, they’re favorites to win but their off ball defense needs to improve. Too often we’ve seen teams like Australia beat the USA with easy layups stemming from backdoor cuts, and the Spanish team is better at that than most. Guys like Ricky Rubio or Sergio Rodriguez love to make passes like that. On offense, the USA should be fine. We’re predicting a 20-point win, although Vegas book makers are only giving them 14 points.

It’s been five years since robotically enhanced Adam Jensen last donned his SPF 45 shades, soul patch and trench coat to hack, sneak and stab his way through the military-information complex and the half decade has done nothing to help him seem like less of a prototypical 1990s cyberpunk dork. Although the character hasn’t aged well, the grim dystopia setting he lives in has grown more relevant, with data-thieving terrorists lurking around every corner to give you a virtual shanking. The long-awaited sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which explores a grim near future in which corporate and military interests have strip data-mined humanity, is the right game for the right time.

Game: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Consoles: PS4 (reviewed), Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Eidos Montreal
Release Date: August 23

Using one of the grimmer endings of Deus Ex: Human Evolution as a jumping off point, you guide Jensen as he has become a social outcast rather than its savior. As part of a devious plot masterminded by shadow powers, cybernetically enhanced humans such as Jensen have been demonized and cast away, forced to either lurk in the underworld or flail against society as terrorists. Attempting to get by as he seeks to expose the conspiracy, Jensen takes on a contract to hunt down a violent band of augmented criminals. You can approach missions with guns blazing, by using your negotiating wits and hacking ability, or with stealthy subversion.

As is fitting for its theme of augmented powers bought, sold and stolen on the open market, countless aspects of the game are customizable. Aside from the usual difficulty settings, you can also opt from one of four control setups — which influence not only button commands but menu access and combat flow — as well as background cinematics and tutorials that you can skip or peruse as you like. If you’re in the mood for a 12-minute recap of the grim events that set up this game, sit back and have at it. If you’re itching to get to the action, you can tap a button and catch up via the rich contextual detail and dialogue snippets that permeate the game’s fabric.

One of the great joys of Mankind Divded is to scrap incapacitated bodies for spare parts and work your way up the augmentations trees. Even at its lower levels, the game can be stubbornly difficult, but that only provides more motivation to delve into your array of potential enhancements, come back fully loaded and use your new sight enhancement, strength or speed power-up or weaponry to infiltrate an encampment that frustrated you before. Early on, when you find yourself donning cyber sight to identify a weak spot in a brick wall that lets you smash through like the Kool-Aid Man, you get a sense of the empowerment fantasy that awaits.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a rare game that makes you feel well-read and lost in thought as you play through the story and ponder its deeper themes. As people willingly hand over freedoms and privacy in favor of connectivity to a grid every bit as willing to exploit them as they are the information and access it offers, they creep toward a singularity with nightmarish implications. Your quest for truth and to make some sort of difference feels futile and naive. You’re confronted with moral choices in the branching story to save a person in pursuit of a cause that sacrifices something else you might have otherwise held dear, and feel dirty even after the most empowering of victories. That you find yourself so divided means the game the devs are playing with you is working just as they designed.

Tori Kullmann, San Diego State University

Tori Kullmann

“I knew I wanted to continue dancing in college and I found this team to be the ideal fit for me. I loved how the team performed at every sporting event, while also dedicating their time to being competitive. Another reason is the location, I wanted to be close to home and close to the beach so I figured this would be the best place for me. The school has such a relaxed and chill vibe that I fell in love with from the second I first visited the campus. I think that SDSU has awesome school spirit and is so diverse.”

Clarity Engel, University of Colorado – Boulder

Clarity Engel

“I major in International Affairs and minor in Spanish. Upon graduating, I want to serve in the Peace Corps or another humanitarian based organization. After I do my service to humanity and travel, I would like to attend law school or graduate school, and then following that, I want to pursue a career in politics, primarily foreign politics.”

Brittany Love, University of Kentucky

Brittany Love

“I’m a founding member of the Alpha Chi Omega-Delta Omega chapter at the University of Kentucky. I helped to start this wonderful sorority my junior year of college, and it’s been more than amazing. I also hold leadership positions as Dance Chair and Greek Sing Chair in this sorority. Outside of my sorority, I also participate in Team Wildcat and intramural sports.”

Mady Smith, University of South Alabama

Mady Smith

“I major in Biomedical Sciences and later I plan to get my Master’s Degree to become a dentist. I think that majoring in Biomedical will help me understand the medical program and give me an advantage as a dentist.”

Kelsey Stone, California State University – Fullerton

Kelsey Stone

“The coolest class I’ve taken so far is an introduction to gender studies class, which I took the first semester of my freshman year. The professor completely blew our minds every day with the questions he asked us. He really made us think about how our society has evolved and how we interact with one another. I still go into the professor’s office hours from time to time when I need a new perspective on things.”
